They say artists don’t make music like they used to anymore. I’ve always wondered if that was true. Did we somehow exhaust all our best songs in the early 2010s and all we’re left with now are just trap beats and sexist lyrics? Of course, there are artists that still create melodic and lyrical masterpieces but we have to admit, nothing hits like songs from the good old days. The songs below are all turning 10 years old. They remind us of a simpler life where we went to school or work with friends and, most importantly, Corona was just a beer in grocery stores. Get in the car losers, we’re going down memory lane.
Let’s kick this list off with something that evokes 2011 Christmas party nostalgia. LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” used to be everywhere a decade ago — in jeepneys, school parties, regular parties, clubs, radios, and your hot pink iPod Nano. The song has 1.9B views on its official music video, a testament to how it was spread far and wide since 2011. The music video just celebrated its 10th year anniversary last March 9. If Gen Z kids “hit the whoa” nowadays, millennials used to “shuffle” thanks to EDM music like “Party Rock Anthem.”
Everyone knows the lyrics to “Someone Like You” by heart. Adele’s powerful ballad has been squeezing hearts for a decade now. Remember getting in a car, staring out the window, and pretending you’re in a sad film while “Someone Like You” blasted from your earphones? Yeah, you were 14 years old, who were you even broken-hearted over? We can’t wait for Adele’s next album release to hurt us again.
Simple Plan and Natasha Bedingfield successfully made the ultimate theme song for couples in a long-distance relationship. In high school, the only “long-distance” you probably suffered through was having a crush on someone who lived north when you went home south.
In 2011, Jessie J sang about screwing capitalism and urged everyone to “forget about the price tag.” Easy enough for her to say because she was a millionaire, but whatever. A decade later and we still can’t help bob our head to the music whenever this song blasts.
The early 2010s was the golden age of Lady Gaga and “You and I” was just one of the songs that cemented her in our list of favorite artists and global pop culture icons. Aside from the song being such a bop (you can easily belt it out during karaoke nights), the music video is classic Lady Gaga. It was a perfect display of her arts and flair for theatrics. “Edge of Glory” was another Lady Gaga hit in 2011 in case you want to go down Gaga memory lane.
You know a song is successful when it can resonate with the audience even a decade later. Bruno Mars is still pretty relatable. Today I don’t want to do anything either, just like when I first listened to “Lazy Song” in 2011. Who can forget how your friends went to Halloween parties wearing monkey face masks like those? The nostalgia hits harder once you realize Bruno Mars grew up with you and he’s now all sleek and cool with his latest song release with Anderson.Paak and Silk Sonic, “Leave the Door Open.”
The year is 2011 and you’re waiting for this song to appear on the Myx Daily Top 10 before you rush to school. Maybe you downloaded it from YouTube or even had to ask your classmate to send it via Bluetooth to your phone. Did you even realize that Jasmine Curtis-Smith starred in the music video?
Christina Perri released “Jar of Hearts” in 2010 and while the tears were still fresh on everyone’s faces, she released “A Thousand Years” the following year. The song was an official soundtrack to the movie The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part One and we’re sure also became the BGM for everyone’s wedding that year. One of the top YouTube comments is right: “This song makes me cry for someone who [has] never existed.”
So much for 2011 old songs.
