Yay Wednesday! To celebrate hump day, we’re giving you good vibes with these amazing female artists. Just in time for Women’s Month, the music industry’s biggest awards night was dominated with mostly female wins. Here are some of them:
The queen herself isn’t just the artist with the most awards in this year’s Grammys. She also made history as the only female artist with the most Grammy awards EVER – 28 wins since she won her first when she was just 19. At the time, she was still with Destiny’s Child and they won Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance for “Say My Name”.
This year, Beyoncé came home with four wins: Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Savage Remix” with Megan Thee Stallion, Best R&B Performance for “Black Parade”, and Best Music Video for “Brown Skin Girl”. Her 9-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter who also starred in “Brown Skin Girl”, is one of the youngest to win a Grammy.
We can’t deny the fact that Megan Thee Stallion took the internet by storm in the past year with her viral Tiktok song “Savage” and collaboration with Cardi B for “WAP”. She was definitely on her hot girl shit as she bagged three out of her four Grammy nominations: Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Savage Remix” with Beyoncé, and Best New Artist, winning over other nominees like Phoebe Bridgers, Doja Cat, and Noah Cyrus.
Do you still remember when Taylor Swift shook the world by dropping her eighth studio album Folklore? Everyone called it album over the year, the album that saved 2020, and this year’s Grammys confirmed just that. Folklore won Best Album of the Year, winning over other artists like Post Malone for Hollywood’s Bleeding and Dua Lipa for Future Nostalgia.
Taylor also made history as one of the few artists who’ve won Album of the Year thrice, sharing the achievement with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon. Her previous wins were in 2016 for 1989 and 2010 for Fearless.
There’s nothing like two iconic artists collaborating for a hit song. Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande bagged Best Pop Duo/Group for “Rain On Me”, winning over BTS’ “Dynamite”, Justin Bieber’s “Intentions”, Taylor Swift and Bon Iver’s “Exile”, and J Balvin, Dula Lipa, Bad Bunny, and Tainy’s “Un Dia (One Day)”. This was actually a controversial win, as many fans of BTS thought the K-pop international sensation deserved the win.
Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia is probably an album you had on repeat when the lockdown first started in March 2020. This year, Dua Lipa took the Best Pop Vocal Album for Future Nostalgia; she was also nominated for five other awards like Best Album, Best Record, and Best Solo Performance. This is Dua’s third Grammy award, after winning Best Dance Recording for Electricity and Best New Artist in 2019.
Fil-Am singer H.E.R. won two awards this year: Best R&B Song for “Better Than I Imagined” and Best Song for “I Can’t Breathe.” The latter song was recorded over FaceTime, as a response to George Floyd’s death that sparked the Black Lives Matter movement in June 2020. H.E.R. also has two existing Grammy wins: Best R&B Album for H.E.R. and Best R&B Performance for “Best Part”, both awarded in 2019.
Billie’s had 10 Grammy nominations since 2020 and has won seven of them – she’s truly remarkable for a 19-year-old! This year, she was nominated for four categories and won two of them: Best Song Written for Visual Media for “No Time to Die” with her brother Finneas and the biggest award of the night, Record of the Year, for “Everything I Wanted”. This is her second win for Record of the Year, after taking it home for the first time in 2020 for “Bad Guy”.
This year, Fiona Apple took home two Grammy awards: Best Alternative Music Album for Fetch the Bold Cutters and Best Rock Performance for “Shameika”. She’s an 11-time Grammy nominee and won her first Grammy in 1998, getting the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for “Criminal”.
