Elmo Has Beef With a Pet Rock and It’s the Most Hilarious Thing We’ve Seen All Week

This week in Bizarre Things That Made Me Laugh: Elmo getting rightfully stressed over his friend, Zoe’s pet rock named Rocco. Our timelines are flooded with clips of the beloved Sesame Street Muppet in various degrees of distress. What exactly is Elmo’s beef with Rocco the rock and why is it the most entertaining thing we’ve seen all week? Is our humor broken or is the whole thing just comedy gold?

 

Look, maybe we need to go out more. If as grown adults we’re flocking to Sesame Street for entertainment, something must be horribly wrong, right? WRONG. Elmo is the pinnacle of hilarity this year (so far, that is).

Zoe’s pet rock Rocco was first introduced in 1999, and from the beginning, Elmo wasn’t exactly enthused about having to interact with an inanimate object. Five years later, he let us know how he really felt. It went like this: Elmo wants another of his favorite oatmeal raisin cookie. Between him and his friend Zoe, they have three cookies. But when Elmo reaches for the one in the middle, Zoe tells him it’s for Rocco, the pet rock, who allegedly told her that he wants the cookie. Elmo was about to flip the table trying to make Zoe understand that “Rocco is a rock” and that “he won’t know the difference!”

“How is Rocco going to eat that cookie, Zoe? Tell Elmo! Rocco doesn’t even have a mouth! Rocco’s just a rock! Rocco is not alive!” The exasperation is exquisite.

 

Rocco has driven Elmo to insanity many times since. Peep the hilarious clip of Elmo “going berserk” after Rocco (it was actually Zoe) stole his thunder by saying the number of the day first.

“All day long all Elmo wanted to do was say the number of the day but noOoOo. Elmo had to sing to Rocco, Elmo has to play the silly word game. And when it was time for Elmo to say the number of the day, Rocco says it before Elmo!” The raw emotion and disappointment behind the delivery almost made us expect tears to come out of his eyes.

 

Being passive-aggressive toward Rocco

Here’s another clip in comedy gold. Elmo is seen appreciating pets that are alive but when Zoe demands that he say hi to her inanimate pet rock, he drips with passive-aggressiveness. Do you hear that sigh after saying that forced “Hi, Rocco”? We have to hand it to Elmo, he’s one mature kid.

 

Is Zoe is part of the problem?

We all went through the phase where we had our imaginary friends and took our stuffed toys with us everywhere. And it looks like Zoe is going through one. In fact, this girl is in the thick of it. It also looks like Zoe’s parents took the affordable route where instead of getting their child an actual pet, they decided an inanimate object will suffice. She takes Rocco, again, her pet rock, everywhere — much to Elmo’s annoyance. Honestly, Zoe could practice being sensitive to her friend’s needs. It’s never good to provoke your friend.

 

ELMO is /DONE/ with Zoe

And if you’re tired of seeing Elmo get pushed around or him giving way for a rock, you’ll be glad to know there was one time Elmo stood up for himself. In this clip, he was so done with Zoe’s shenanigans, finally snapping and screaming, “This playdate is over!” He sassily walks out and when Zoe asked her where he’s going, he sarcastically says “Alaska!” Gotta love Elmo.

 

Elmo speaks up after 18 years

Whatever happened between Elmo, Zoe, and Rocco anyway? Elmo enlightened us about his feelings decades later in a fresh 2022 tweet. But it looks like he hasn’t resolved his feelings toward Rocco just yet.

“Don’t worry everybody! Elmo and Zoe practiced sharing and are still best buds forever! Elmo loves you Zoe! Ha ha ha!” the Muppet wrote. “Elmo doesn’t want to talk about Rocco,” he added. Yikes.

He even follows it up with a separate tweet jab: “Has anybody ever seen a rock eat a cookie? Elmo is just curious.” Some childhood wounds never heal, eh Elmo?

 

Netizens are losing their minds

Elmo’s reaction is a trauma response.

All 2004 Elmo dreamt about.

The correct answer is “No.”

The birth of a modern meme.

So that explains it.

Give it to him.

 

In conclusion, Sassy Elmo is the 2022 energy we all need to be channeling

I don’t remember Elmo being this sassy in all of the hours I watched Sesame Street as a kid. But now that I’m an adult, his energy is what I’ll be bringing to face the year ahead.
