As one of the leading streaming services, Netflix has provided subscribers with many good shows and films and has even branched out to create their own original shows, like Stranger Things, Sandman, and even the more recent Wednesday. However, even if the platform gave viewers these fantastic shows, some remain wary of falling in love with any new Netflix original, due to the looming possibility of shows getting canceled. Just recently, the hashtag #CancelNetflix was trending after Warrior Nun received the ax. But it’s not the first victim. Here are some shows that were canceled way too soon.

Warrior Nun

Based on the comic book character Warrior Nun Areala created by Ben Dunn, the series revolves around 19-year-old Ava Silva (Ava Batpista), who finds herself waking up in a morgue to a new life as part of an ancient order of nuns. Known as the Order of the Cruciform Sword, these nuns battle demons and other powerful forces out to get the divine artifact now stuck on Ava’s back.

Despite its high rating in the Rotten Tomatoes metric (99% Audience Score from over 8,000 viewers!), the show was canceled shortly after its second season aired.

Sense8

Written and directed by the Wachowskis (The Matrix) and starring a multinational ensemble cast, Sense8 follows eight strangers from all over the world, who discover that they are mentally and emotionally linked as part of a “sensate” cluster. A daring show, it explored the human psyche, as well as identity, sexuality, gender, and politics, delivering a message of empathy across differences.

The series gained a huge, passionate fan base and positive critical reception. However, despite this, the show was canceled after two seasons. The second season ended on a cliffhanger, as the story was written for a five-season run. After fans created petitions and trended hashtags, Netflix greenlit a two-hour special that tied off loose threads, but many still found it rushed and overstuffed.

Everything Sucks!

A parody of mid-1990s teen culture, the series centers on a group of teen misfits attending Boring High School in the real-life town of Boring, Oregon. The A/V Club and Drama Club band together to film a movie, and throughout the collaboration, the teens are forced to deal with mental health, sexuality, coming of age, and other teenage concerns.

The show was set up to tackle important subjects while still banking on nostalgia. It had the potential to be a long-time project, with most characters and cast members being young, and even received positive critical reviews. However, the show was canceled after its first season.

I Am Not Okay With This

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Charles Forsman, I Am Not Okay With This tells the story of Sydney Novak (Sophia Lillis), a 17-year-old girl suddenly manifesting supernatural abilities. After her father’s sudden death by suicide, Sydney must learn how to control her newfound telekinetic powers, while also navigating the challenges of high school, family, and sexuality.

The first season was pretty much a set-up for the rest of the story and was even renewed for a second season. Unfortunately, it was released right before the COVID-19 pandemic and was subsequently axed.

Archive 81

Inspired by the podcast of the same name, Archive 81 tells two timelines: archivist Dan (Mamoudou Athie) is hired by a mysterious company to restore the tapes of a 1994 grad student named Melody (Dina Shihabi). In the tapes, Melody records her dissertation about an apartment building that burned down. It seems straightforward, but Dan gets pulled into a world of mysteries involving Melody and a mysterious cult in the apartment building.

In its first month after premiering, the series gained over 128 million hours watched across the globe, according to Netflix’s data. Despite this, the series was canceled after just one season.

The Society

This mystery teen drama tells the story of a group of teenagers, who suddenly find themselves left alone in the world after the rest of the population of their small town disappears. They become locked in when a dense forest suddenly appears to surround the town. With no way out and no way to contact anyone else, the teenagers are forced to learn how to run their community and survive with scarce resources.

Despite the interesting premise, the show was canceled after its first season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The OA

In The OA, a young blind woman named Prairie Johnson (Brit Marling) who has been missing for seven years suddenly resurfaces. But despite being blind before she went missing, Prairie can now see. Aside from the miraculous return of her eyesight, she also now carries scars on her back and calls herself the OA or Original Angel.

The mystery was well-received, and according to actor Jason Isaacs, the series was even meant to have five seasons. However, it was still axed after only two.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

A high school drama with actual dark humor and even horror elements, Sabrina is based on the Archie Comics character Sabrina Spellman, who struggles with her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal. While dealing with teenage drama and her own witchcraft woes, Sabrina also needs to fight evil forces threatening her, her family, and humanity.

Despite gaining a huge fanbase, the show was canceled after two seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Sabrina did make a cameo in Riverdale even after her show ended, so maybe we’ll see her again.
