PSA bookworms, there’s a new e-reader in town and it just might usurp your favorite Kindle. A bold claim, we know, but the Boox Palma from China-based company Onyx International and its features are well worth checking out. Here’s what we love about it.
Boox (pronounced “books”) calls the Palma its mobile e-paper. It’s designed to combine the compact features of a phone but instead of the usual AMOLED display, you get a crisp e-ink display with the same functionalities. The pocketable phone-shaped design fits in the palm of your hand and makes it easier for you to effortlessly carry your favorite books on the go.
Digging into the nitty gritty of this nifty device, bookworms might fall even more in love with it. It’s equipped with an Octa-core CPU with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB ROM so you can download as many books — and even podcasts — as you want. The Boox Palma lets you browse through the Internet and use third-party apps in the Google Play Store. Yes, this includes all your favorite social media apps and even games!
You’ll get a 6.13″ eye-friendly state-of-the-art E Ink Carta 1200 display with a 300 PPI ultra-crisp resolution. Thanks to the Boox Super Refresh Technology, scrolling and turning pages is a smooth and seamless operation. It’s also water-repellent with dual-tone lighting that’s easy on the eyes.
Just like a phone, you can customize the Boox Palma with custom widgets. Even the Function Buttons on the side of the device can be customized for going back, doing a full-page refresh, taking a screenshot, turning pages, or scrolling.
And because it’s built like a phone, it also has a microphone, USB-C port, speaker, and a microSD card slot. The only thing we’re missing here is a SIM card slot!

Aside from its incredibly compact size and phone-like functionality, the Boox Palma blows other e-readers out the water with this feature: It can take photos and videos. Yup, you read that right! The 16 MP rear camera can transform your documents into digital format. You can snap photos and film as you would a regular phone and the results aren’t too bad either (check the video above!). It also comes with a built-in flash to aid low-light situations.
@jonathan_casey Is this the world’s first true pocketable e-book!? It’s called the BOOX Palma and it runs Android which means you have access to the Playstore and Google Services. It’s the ultimate travel e-book that slides right into your pocket. If it only had a cellular connection 😏 #boox #eink #ebook #kindle #booxpalma #palma #reading #travelbook #tech #ereader #unboxing #joncasey #tablet #ipad #inky #android #epaper #fyp ♬ Paint The Town Red – Doja Cat
You can get the Boox Palma for $279.99 (roughly P15,824.88) in Black or White versions. For an e-ink reader with the features and functionalities of a smartphone, it’s well worth the price tag.
Thankfully, Boox ships to the Philippines, so if you want to get your hands on this device, all you have to do is place an order directly from their website. You can choose to ship from either the US warehouse or the Hong Kong warehouse with a shipping fee of $25.99 for the latter.
