After being embroiled in copyright controversies with her song ‘Selos,’ Bangsamoro singer Shaira has dropped a new single titled ‘Selos na Yan Friend,’ which appears to allude to the backlash she has received. The latest track seems to be a follow-up to ‘Selos,’ featuring brand new lyrics and the B-Pop singer spitting rap lines.

However, the song drew mixed reactions from Pinoys

With thousands of views across YouTube and Facebook, it seems Shaira’s embarking on a fresh start with the release of ‘Selos na Yan Friend’. In the song, Shaira appears to address those who criticize her success, singing lyrics like: “At tila bay di ka masaya, ‘pag may tumataas hinihila pababa, oh selos nayan friend.” But Pinoys are not buying it, even going so far as to label it a “gaslighting tactic”.

“Actually ‘di ka hinila pababa at wala ring nainggit sayo. Pinuna ka lang sa copyright issues. Para maitama mo at mailabas ang totoo mong galing. Dapat pasalamat ka basher man o hindi at least naitama mo ang talaga namang mali na ginawa,” one Facebook user wrote.

They also encouraged the singer to focus on creating original music and put the controversy behind her.

“Ayaw mo din naman siguro mangyari in the future na kunin ng iba ang gawa mo na walang pahintulot sa’yo. Kahit kailan, hindi nakaka-proud umangat sa maling paraan.” Another netizen said.

Conversely, some say that Shaira deserves another chance to prove herself as an artist.

“Madalas talaga kapwa kalahi mo pa ang hihila sayo, inaayos mo na ang mali, ang mali pa rin ang iniiisip nila, parang kulang na lang sabihin nila ‘oi girl, wala kang karapan sa larangan ng pagkakanta,” a comment reads.

Shaira speaks out about her recent controversy 

The singer mentioned that when they first released ‘Selos,’ they didn’t anticipate its popularity, particularly outside Mindanao. She acknowledged that her song was inspired by Lenka’s ‘Trouble is a Friend’ and has since received scrutiny. Nonetheless, Shaira believes it’s a learning experience for herself and AHS Productions.

“Gayumpaman, sa kabila nang pambabatikos na pinupukol sa amin ay pinili naming manahimik dahil ayaw naming humaba pa ang mga isyu at maging sanhi pa nang hindi pagkakaunawaan ng bawat isa. Kaya humihingi lang po kami nang kaunting pang-unawa,” Shaira said.

She clarified that Lenka’s team didn’t file a lawsuit against them, and the issue was settled peacefully.

“Nais kong ihayag sa inyong lahat na malapit na po naming ibalik sa mga streaming platforms ang kantang ‘Selos’, kasabay na din po ng iba pang kanta ng aming produksiyon.”

A message for Lenka

Aside from thanking her fans and AHS Productions, Shaira also gave a shoutout to Lenka, whom she calls her ‘idol.’

“And to my idol, Ms. Lenka, I want to express my deepest gratitude to you and your team for allowing me this opportunity,”

She also hopes to meet the Australian musician soon.
