SHINee is celebrating their 10th year anniversary on May 25, 2018. Starting with a fanmeeting on May 27, this is the first time they appear on Korean stage without Jonghyun.
With complex dance routines for their singles and tour performances, SHINee is one of the best live dance groups in K-pop. Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin have been commended for the way they pull off their dance choreography from all over the world. SHINee is also the only group to win the Best Dance Performance Award from Korea’s Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) three times.
Reaching the 10-year mark is a definite milestone. Take a look back at some of SHINee’s cool choreography over the years.
Released in SHINee’s debut year, Love Like Oxygen was choreographed by Rino Nakasone and shows off the group’s smooth moves early on, as well as their ability to incorporate props flawlessly (more later). Nakasone also choreographed SHINee’s debut single Replay.
While all dances rely on memorization of steps and, in idol groups, a lot of formation changes, Your Number ups the ante by relying heavily on each SHINee member memorizing individual moves. #bawalmangopyakayseatmate The choreography flows from one person to the next in the verses and it’s only in the chorus that the whole group dances the exact same steps together in unison.
Your Number was choreographed by Nakasone, who was once a backup dancer for Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, and Gwen Stefani.
When this music video was released, Shawols all over the world cried out: “sana mic stand na lang ako!”.This choreography by Tony Testa won the group their second Best Dance Performance Award from MAMA in 2013.
The music video takes its inspiration for a b-horror movie, with choreography by Tony Testa. Testa has choreographed for Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, and was an associate choreographer for Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” tour.
Yet another Testa creation, Everybody has a taxing choreography that involves the SHINee members themselves throwing Taemin in the air.
SHINee perform half of this song with blindfolds on. What more do you need?
Evil is part of SHINee’s The Misconceptions of Me album, released in 2013. This performance was part of their 2014 concert tour, SHINee World III.
Sherlock was the first SHINee song choreographed by Testa. It’s also the first song that bagged the group a win for Best Dance Performance at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2012.
Here’s SHINee dancing to Sherlock at twice the speed:
Lucifer, choreographed by Shim Jae-won and Rino Nakasone, was the first SHINee song that earned the band a nomination for a Best Dance Performance Award back in 2010. It made a mark for having tutting incorporated in the choreography.
Honorable mentions: View, choreographed by Ian Eastwood, which won the group their third MAMA Best Dance Performance Award in 2015, and Ring Ding Dong, as the lure of Misha Gabriel and Nick Bass’ choreographed rocka-rocka-rocka so fantastic, fantastic, elastic, elastic still proves to be strong, nine years after the song’s release.
