Living the life of a twenty-something adult has its fair share of joys and facepalm-worthy moments, which is why we typically turn to other people for guidance. Do they always hit the mark? Well, it kinda depends on who you ask. Not all adulting advice is equal – just take it from this Pinoy Reddit discussion. 

“Save as much as you can for a rainy day”

With so many splurge-worthy finds tempting you left, right, and center, the idea of delayed gratification has become a trend among those caught in the grip of capitalism. Think of it as hitting the brakes before you go full throttle in your wants and needs. 

However, it reaches a point where delayed gratification is nothing but severe self-deprivation in disguise. You have all this money, and for what? You’ll soon realize that squirreling away every penny for an uncertain future might mean missing out on the joys and opportunities you can enjoy in the here and now.

“Unpaid internships are fine because you gain valuable experience”

Sadly, most PH companies would probably give major side-eyes to internship applicants who dared to say magic words like “food allowance” or “transportation reimbursements”. Sure, the experience would boost their resumes, but it’s only right that companies compensate these dedicated interns for their hard work.

“Just go to work. You’re not here to make friends”

Although being an office lone wolf isn’t inherently bad, taking it to the extreme might just make you miserable in the long run. You’d be missing out on the joys of teamwork. Remember, some workplaces thrive in collaborations. And for another thing, you’d be robbing yourself of what could potentially be some meaningful connections. 

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day of your life”

Countless adults once believed life would be much easier once they landed their dream jobs. But as it turns out, adulting isn’t that simple. It’s okay to hate the job that puts food on your table — you gotta do what you gotta do.

“Everything happens for a reason”

While this advice looks like one of those inspiring quotes you’d want to hang in your living room, it’s probably the last thing most adults want to hear after devastating situations. When you get laid off from your job or caught in an unexpected accident, simply living by these “reasons” and moving on aren’t enough. It’s okay to call out the universe when things don’t go your way.

“Don’t stoop down to their level”

Putting the “be the bigger person” touch on everything can only take you so far before people start taking advantage of your kindness every chance they get. Of course, we’re not saying you need to resort to violence or threats to show people you aren’t a pushover. But as long as you’re on the side of what’s right, don’t take anybody’s crap.

“Follow your passion”

No offense to those peeps who’ve sworn by this mantra and made it, but achieving success takes more than just passion. You might need financial resources, the right connections, and even a pinch of luck to earn the universe’s seal of approval.

“Money can’t buy happiness”

In this economy? When you’re struggling to put food on the table or pay your bills on time, then money can definitely make things better.
