From South Korea’s Parasite to our very own Dolly de Leon in Triangle of Sadness, Asians continue to win in the film world! And last night, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan made history after winning Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively at the Academy Awards for their amazing performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Coming at the heels of their Oscars wins, the two co-stars are set to reunite again in another project in Disney+’s American Born Chinese — and we just got a release date and a teaser!
Dubbed a genre-hopping action-comedy, American Born Chinese follows the story of a young boy named Jin Wang. He’s the child of Chinese immigrants, but he’s also just an average high school student trying to find a balance between his social circles and his home life. But his life takes a strange turn when the new school year opens and he meets a new foreign student. Different worlds collide as Jin is pulled into the middle of Chinese mythological gods.
The new Disney+ coming-of-age adventure series is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang originally released in 2006. It won several awards, including the 2007 Michael L. Printz Award and the 2007 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album: New.
On top of Oscar and Golden Globe winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, American Born Chinese also features an all-star international cast. Ben Wang (Chang Can Dunk) plays the lead role of Jin Wang. Joining them are two-time International Emmy Award nominee Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season), Chin Han (Mortal Kombat), Daniel Wu (Reminiscence), former Taekwondo champion Jimmy Liu and Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic).
Guest starring in the show are Everything Everywhere All At Once’s Stephanie Hsu and James Hong. Other recurring cast members include Poppy Liu (iCarly), Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians), Rosalie Chiang (Turning Red), Lisa Lu (Crazy Rich Asians), Jimmy O. Yang (Love Hard), and Leonard Wu (Alita: Battle Angel).
Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers, Central Park) serves as executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Short Term 12) is set to direct and serves as executive producer, alongside Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan (both of Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level), Erin O’Malley (Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.), Asher Goldstein (Short Term 12, Just Mercy) and Gene Luen Yang.
The premiere of the much-anticipated series has been set on May 24, 2023 only on Disney+.
