This year has been all sorts of crazy so far, but nothing quite prepared us for the gift from the heavens above that is Ben&Ben covering K-Pop songs.
The popular OPM band known for the well-loved tracks “Maybe The Night” and “Kathang Isip” made waves in South Korea recently after K-Pop artists—including NCT’s Mark and Day6’s Young K—mentioned and played their original song “Leaves” on VLive, a live video streaming app. “Ben&Ben” then topped the real-time search of South Korean music chart Melon, followed by the word “Leaves” at the no. 2 spot—much to the thrill of the band and Filipino K-Pop fans.
Keeping the fun alive, Ben&Ben covered four K-Pop songs for the first episode of BBTV as a thank you to the K-Pop artists who gave them a shoutout and also as a treat to their Pinoy followers. And just this week, the band surprised their subscribers to yet another special episode of K-Pop song covers, featuring the music of BTS, EXO, and SEVENTEEN—among others.
But since it seems like nobody—that includes us—could get enough of the band’s unique renditions of K-Pop songs, we rounded up some K-Pop tracks we’d love to hear Ben&Ben cover (pls. notice us):
SHINee is one of K-Pop’s most trailblazing acts with their experimental approach on music, and their 12-year-old discography is a testament to this. Needless to say, it would be really interesting to see Ben&Ben take on any of the quintet’s eargasmic tunes. Our top pick? SHINee’s 2015 disco-funk release “Married To The Music.”
Ben&Ben acknowledging K-Pop artists for taking notice of their music kinda gives us hope that they’ll do an ASTRO cover someday. After all, Astro member Cha Eun Woo wowed his Filipino fans with a performance of “Kathang Isip” at his Manila fan meeting last year. That said, we’d totally dig a Ben&Ben cover of ASTRO’s ‘90s-influenced R&B title track “Crazy Sexy Cool”, which heralded the group’s maturity in the music scene.
The sultry and jazzy “Décalcomanie” is marked by a clapping rhythm and soaring chorus that might be challenging to cover for an indie-folk band like Ben&Ben, but hey, they’ve always got surprises up their sleeve, and we’re pretty sure they’ll be able to put their own spin to this MAMAMOO song flawlessly.
We don’t know but something tells us that Ben&Ben will enjoy playing around with this earworm of a song that swept South Korea to a frenzy, considering its mellow yet subtly upbeat feel.
This debut track from Girls’ Generation subunit TTS—composed of members Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun—exudes so much sass and power that it would be fascinating to see Ben&Ben strip it down and give it a laid-back version that we’ll equally love.
Running through the comments in Ben&Ben’s K-Pop cover videos, we noticed that this song (along with The Rose’s other emotional track ”She’s In The Rain”) winds up in most requests and we can definitely see why: “Sorry” has a quality that’s reminiscent of Ben&Ben’s sentimental side, so much so that if they will grant their fans’ wishes and cover this song, they’ll absolutely own it.
“Nobody” maybe Wonder Girls’ best-known release, but the girl band has churned out several gems since, and “Why So Lonely” is one of them. This psychedelic blend of reggae-pop and ‘70s rock suits Ben&Ben’s current band set-up so well we can almost hear them sing it in our heads.
It’s always great seeing Ben&Ben having fun performing a happy tune. And when it comes to cheery songs, Eric Nam’s light-hearted “Can’t Help Myself” never fails to cross our thoughts. We’d totally love to see Ben&Ben groove to it!
Honorable Mentions:
You think we’re gonna stop at eight songs? Wrong! There’s just a lot of K-Pop songs we’d love a Ben&Ben cover of that it would leave us sleepless if we don’t put these out there, at least (*wink, wink*):
“Blood” by Day6
“Déjà-Boo” by Jonghyun
“Blueming” by IU
