8 Players We’ll Miss
in UAAP Volleyball Season 79
By Josef Fuentebella

With UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament closing its doors last Saturday, we bid farewell to a year full of exciting moments and matches brought about by the 8 competing varsity teams in the annual sports fest. Unfortunately, along with the season, we also bid farewell several notable players that have either maxed out their collegiate eligibility or are not returning due to the completion of their academic requirements. In this article, we’ll be listing down the 8 most memorable volleybelles whose presence we’ll definitely miss when Season 79 begins rolling.

8. Alyssa Valdez (ADMU Lady Eagles)

Easily the most polarizing figure in UAAP Volleyball in this decade, Alyssa Valdez will go down in history as one of the league’s most dominant offensive players. Since her entry into the senior’s division in 2011, the Batangas-native led Ateneo to five consecutive finals appearances, producing two championships in the run (Season 76 and 77). In addition to this, she also piled up numerous individual accolades, of which includes three straight Season MVP plums, four straight scoring titles, and a Finals MVP award. While the Lady Eagles have plenty of talent in their roster, they would be hard-pressed to find someone of Valdez’s caliber.

7. Ara Galang (DLSU Lady Spikers)

Ara Galang’s name has become synonymous to success over the duration of her UAAP career. Crowned as Season 74’s best rookie, she was awarded as the Season’s Most Valuable Player the following year, an award she shared with teammate Abigail Maraño. The only time she missed the finals was during Season 77 when she suffered a gruesome knee injury during La Salle’s stepladder semi-finals against NU. Nevertheless, Galang would redeem herself the next season after leading DLSU to the championship in her final year.

6. Mika Reyes (DLSU Lady Spikers)

One of the league’s most recognizable players, Mika Reyes is known not only for her looks but also for the swagger she brings inside the court. A regular fixture in La Salle’s championship teams, she was utilized as a middle blocker due to her towering presence. Known for her stare downs and rousing celebrations, Reyes is one of the reasons for volleyball’s recent surge in popularity in the country, owning one of the largest fan bases amongst players.

5. Gyzelle Sy (FEU Lady Tamaraws)

A member of several competitive Lady Tamaraw teams, Gyzelle Sy has always flown under the radar due to her team failing to make deep play-off runs. Winning the Best Setter Award in Season 74, Sy remained as one of the league’s best in her position. Her last year was supposedly in Season 77 but she took a leave of absence from the team that year for personal reasons. In her return this season, she almost brought FEU to the finals after playing a key role in forcing a Game 2 in their semi-final showdown against DLSU.
