Last night, one of the much awaited nights in the Philippine beauty pageant world finally arrived. Binibining Pilipinas 2022 held its coronation night at the Araneta Coliseum, where 40 contestants competed for the crowns to represent the country at the following international pageants: Miss Grand International 2022, Miss Globe 2022, Miss Intercontinental 2022, and Miss International 2022. From Joshua Garcia’s question to the near-Steve Harvey moment, here are some of the highlights of Binibining Pilipinas 2022 Coronation Night.

One of the most popular topics from last night’s coronation event was the questions that the judges asked the contestants, particularly Joshua Garcia’s. The actor served as one of the judges in the beauty pageant, and as such, was given the task of asking the candidate about their thoughts on a pressing issue in the country. Addressed to #1 Stacey Gabriella Daniel of Cainta, Rizal, Joshua’s question gained a lot of buzz immediately after he spoke: “Personally, how do you distinguish a historian from a Marites?”
Many believe the question is referencing Ella Cruz’s statement claiming “history is like chismis”, which drew flak from not only netizens but also historians and academics as well.

Much like the question from Joshua Garcia, the answer of candidate #1 Stacey Gabrielle Daniel also received much applause from the live audience and netizens worldwide.
Distinguishing historians from gossipers, she said:
“A historian is someone who recognizes our painful past, with factual evidence. Looking back at our rich vibrant history, and as well as the time when our humanity was trampled on and our heritage was almost erased. If we look at our past, we can surely move onward and upward and rebuild, rise from this pandemic and dream of a safer, healthier, and happier Philippines.”

Another crowd favorite answer was that from #31 Yllana Marie S. Aduana of Laguna. She was asked for her thoughts on the advocacy “my body, my choice,” which is all the more pressing right now due to the ongoing abortion debate in the US. She answered:
“I believe that all women should always be entitled to our own opinion and we should have the most autonomy on whatever decision that we have towards our own body. Because us women we are a tower of strength, a pillar of hope, and champions of purpose and we should always believe that all our choices should always come into our hands. Thank you.”
Comedienne Herlene Nicole Budol also received much love after she broke stereotypes on stage. She finished as the 1st runner-up, and she also bagged several special awards, including Binibining Shein, Binibining Pizza Hut, Binibining Kumi, Jag Queen, Binibining Silka, and Binibining World Balance.

Fulfilling her promise to speak in Filipino during the Q&A portion, she received the question: “What has been your biggest transformation since you joined and how could this make you deserving of a crown tonight?” She said:
“Para sa akin, isang karangalan na nakatungtong ako dito sa Binibining Pilipinas bilang isang binibining hindi inaasahan. Para sa akin, ang sarap pa lang mangarap. Walang imposible. Isa po akong komedyante na laki sa hirap at ang aking transpormasyon ay magbigay ng inspirasyon because I know for myself that I’m uniquely beautiful with a mission.”
Her answer garnered praise from netizens, including beauty queen MJ Lastimosa.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a pageant without some show-stopping long gowns from all candidates. This year, there were a couple of favorites among netizens. First is #8 Herlene Nicole Budol of Angono, Rizal, who committed to her nickname “Hipon Girl” with a red high-slit, one-shoulder gown featuring details of a shrimp on her back.

Meanwhile, #28 Gabrielle Camille Basiano of Borongan, Eastern Samar slayed in her fully beaded gold and silver dress paired with an equally beaded salakot on her head. She won Best in Long Gown for the second year in a row, and she was also crowned Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental 2022.

Pinoy Pop was another highlight during the coronation night as boy band SB19 took the stage. The group opened the pageant with a performance of the theme song “Win Your Heart” as Binibinis strutted and sashayed around the stage. Before the crowning moment, they also sang “Bazinga” and “SLMT”, hyping up the crowd even despite the late hours.
Even non-fans expressed their awe for the world-level performance SB19 presented last night.
I can’t OMG, not a fan of ppop but SB19 performance still stuck on my head wtf I’m impressed, their vocals, visuals and such, WHAT A TOTAL PACKAGE, should I stan them?#BinibiningPilipinas2022

Us at the big dome earlier nervous that there will be a “Steve Harvey” moment in this year’s BB Pilipinas 2022. #BinibiningPilipinas2022 #BBPilipinas #BbPilipinas2022 #CoronationNight pic.twitter.com/r8MGuQ5sPy

The crowning moment of winners is usually nerve-wracking already not only for the candidates but also for the live and online audience. But it became doubly so after there was a slight delay in announcing the winners, and even more so when the floor director approached hosts Catriona Gray and Nicole Cordoves, who both look perplexed.
There was no changing of winners or something similar to what happened with the infamous Steve Harvey moment during Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach’s win. However, netizens continue to speculate, as the organizers have yet to issue a statement. Even celebrities like Vice Ganda couldn’t help but react:
May very wrong! #BinibiningPilipinas

On a lighter note, it wouldn’t be a Filipino event if netizens didn’t react with memes from the many memorable moments. Here are some of the most popular memes and reactions from netizens:
