Many were surprised to discover that the Philippines’ pole vaulting sensation, EJ Obiena, is in a long-term, low-key relationship (sorry, ladies!). We’re willing to bet his girlfriend, Caroline Joyeux, has undoubtedly seen a surge in her online followers as fans become curious about the woman who captured the heart of one of the country’s most beloved athletes. Here’s what we know about Caroline so far.

Caroline Joyeux is from Germany

Caroline was born and raised in Berlin, Germany. Born on March 23, 2001, as the youngest of three siblings, Caroline is currently 23 years old.

She is also an athlete

Like her boyfriend, Caroline is also a dedicated athlete. While EJ soars to new heights in pole vaulting, Caroline excels in triple jump, long jump, and track and field.

She began her athletic journey in 2017 before specializing in long and triple jump in 2022.

According to her records at World Athletics, she has achieved a 13.64-meter jump at the recently concluded 30. Midsommar Meeting in Berlin on July 17, 2024. She also finished eighth in the European Athletics U23 Championships.

She has been dating EJ Obiena for four years

Caroline and Obiena started dating sometime in 2020, shortly after they met at a training camp in Italy. Obiena revealed their relationship in a 2022 podcast episode with Pia Arcangel. He described the initial meet-up as “funny, awkward, and cheesy.” But the pair hit it off after crossing paths again in Germany and in the Philippines.

Since Caroline is based in Berlin and EJ in the Philippines, their relationship has mostly been long-distance. Despite the physical separation, Caroline has nothing but admiration for her boyfriend. “He is very good as a boyfriend. He is like a brother, friend, boyfriend together,” she shared in an interview.

Although the couple has managed to keep their relationship relatively private, Caroline can be seen posting the occasional photo. Case in point: Caroline’s series of Instagram stories of her in Paris, supporting her boyfriend from the stands. She even had her nails painted to the Philippine flag colors!
