Miranda Sings was the peak of comedy on YouTube in 2009. She would slide into our screens and grace us with her overlined lipstick, talentless vocals, and hilarious facial expressions to match. Sings is the comedic alter ego of Colleen Ballinger, who is an exceptional singer IRL, and who has amassed quite a following thanks to her online persona. We would’ve been content to leave Sings-slash-Ballinger as one of the people who made the whole world happy in the past but recent grooming allegations against the now 36-year-old singer has made that impossible. What is going on?
Accusations towards Ballinger date back to 2020, when Adam McIntyre came forward with a video that revealed how the singer had an inappropriate friendship with him back when he was 13 years old, along with other minors in Ballinger’s fan club.
She got too personal with them, even going so far as to ask weird questions (“Are you a virgin?”) and sharing the details of her divorce.
In the video, McIntyre also revealed Ballinger sent him a pair of bra and underwear via mail. The singer addresses this in a 2020 apology video where she said she “knows what part of my brain was missing at the time.”
Further proof of these accusations are included in TikTok user @glittering_ghostwriter’s viral video. It showed screenshots of Ballinger’s fan club group chat which featured an inappropriate name.
@glittering_ghostwriter Replying to @b026782929 this isnt even all of the screenshots unfortunately. Multiple people who were in this chat have come forward to say its real #colleenballinger #colleen #colleenballingercontroversy #ballingerfamily #influencer ♬ original sound – Glittering Ghostwriter
“I’m not saying that she is [a predator],” says @glittering_ghostwriter on TikTok. “What I’m saying is that she used grooming tactics and predatory behavior to get what she wanted out of fans which was that they buy her merchandise, show up to her shows, and give her free labor and most importantly, attack anybody who attacks her.”
A few days after the allegations went viral anew in 2023, Ballinger released a 10-minute video on YouTube simply titled “hi.” It was her unique version of a video apology, which, based on the comments, is something the Internet did not find endearing or genuine.
“I haven’t been doing so great so I took a little break. There are a lot of people saying things about me that aren’t quite true. It doesn’t matter if it’s true though, just as long as it’s entertaining to you,” she sings.
She admits that she used to message her fans back in the day but she was just “trying to be besties with everybody.” She said “there were times in DMs when I would overshare” but she “changed [her] behaviour and took accountability.”
As the song went on, she also said that the only thing she’s ever groomed is her two Persian cats. If you want to know the whole thing but don’t want to listen to it, a Twitter user kindly transcribed Ballinger’s “10-minute non-apology” song:

In any other context, the song would’ve had heads bobbing to the tune. But the fact that she wrote the lyrics for a 10-minute song and rehearsed it without seeing what’s wrong with grabbing a ukulele to defend herself against something as serious as grooming allegations did not sit well with the viewers.
“An apology without an apology,” read one YouTube comment.
“This did absolutely nothing, and was probably more harm then good,” read another.
As for McIntyre, he’s glad that Ballinger’s video has at least achieved something — prove his point.

It looks like Ballinger’s apology isn’t accepted by the masses judging by how Twitter reacted to it:

(For context, Sienna Mae is a TikTok star accused of sexually assaulting fellow TikToker Jack Wright. She made an interpretative dance apology video for it, something the Internet deemed was in poor taste.)
