Rapper. Vocalist. Idol. Songwriter. Music producer. 1/7 of global group BTS. Suga wears many hats and even goes by different names from his stage name to his real name Min Yoongi. Outside of BTS’ fans ARMY, he’s less known by another stage name: Agust D.
But now he’s bringing all of these personas together in his latest album D-DAY. And he’s also taking us behind the scenes following Suga on his journey from the beginning up to the album’s release on the Disney+ documentary SUGA: Road to D-DAY. We got an early look into the documentary, and these are the key takeaways we got from Suga that we’re sure anyone, even non-ARMYs, can appreciate.
In his younger years, Suga was determined to just be a producer. ARMY often jokingly recall how he entered Big Hit dreaming to be a producer but ended up becoming an idol. Now in his 30s, Suga now wears many hats from idol and rapper to songwriter and producer. He muses that one doesn’t always have to be so single-minded to reach their dreams and be happy.

Suga has been working on his latest album since 2020, but he’s even hinted that he’s been working on more songs before that. That’s at least three years of Suga working and polishing his album before he let the rest of the world listen to it. But the road to this album wasn’t a linear journey; some songs were written many years ago, while others were written just some months ago. Even the way the documentary is edited emphasizes that, jumping from one time period to another, going back and forth in time.
Creatives are no strangers to slumps, and Suga is no exception. At one point, while working on D-Day, he found himself struggling to work on new songs. So he took a step backward, retreating up into the mountains and away from the noise of the city. Well, he did it in a private house built by his company for a show, but you get the picture. ‘
Roadblocks may seem like a big hindrance on your journey, but you can choose to do something about it, even if it’s just a quick change of scenery.

Throughout his album-writing process, Suga met with many fellow artists, particularly US-based musicians. He wanted to see what it’s like making music in the place where the world’s top songs come from, so he went out of his country and his comfort zone to see and experience all that.

Being known worldwide can make creating real connections difficult. But Suga found good friends with fellow musicians like Steve Aoki, Halsey, and Anderson Paak — despite the language barrier. There’s an understanding that comes much easier due to their shared experiences and shared love for music.

Despite stumbling and struggling on the way, Suga’s goal has always been clear to him: he wants people to listen to his music. He wants people to recognize his work and say he’s not too bad of a producer. Spoiler: he’s not just “not too bad” — he’s actually really good.

Some people might say getting to buy whatever you want is fun. But for Suga, that’s not the case. For him, what makes his life fun — what gives him purpose — is making music, and he feels lucky to have recognized that. Even if he gets so frustrated at times that he wants to quit, he finds himself always coming back to music, because it makes him happy.
Even if it gets hard, you should keep on doing it. Because the happiness it will bring you will always be worth it. Suga is even ready to go to the mountains and seclude himself just to finish his album. That’s how much he keeps at it, at making music, despite the slumps and roadblocks.
Because for Suga, a singer is someone who makes music and performs his songs in concert. And that’s exactly what he decided to do with this latest release under the name Agust D. Starting next week, he’ll be performing both his new and old songs live in sold-out shows in the US, Japan, Southeast Asia, and finally back home in South Korea.
Find out the meaning behind Suga’s album D-DAY when you watch SUGA: Road to D-DAY on Disney+ starting today, April 21.
