Singer-songwriter Doja Cat has been involved in a number of issues of late, such as beefing with her fandom and being accused of “strong Satanic vibes” after releasing her recent single “Paint the Town Red.” But the 27-year-old couldn’t care less about people’s criticism. In fact, she went on to release another track, one that’s surprisingly not about her critics but about — can you guess? — Twitter’s transformation to X. And as random as that sounds, what’s even more random is Doja Cat’s chosen song title — “Balut.”
Doja Cat explains the meaning behind her new song ‘Balut’:
“i named the song balut because it signifies a bird that’s being eaten alive. It’s a metaphor for twitter stans and the death of twitter toxicity. The beginning of ‘X’ and the end of ‘tweets’.” pic.twitter.com/MPJELOnYi9

Doja Cat naming her song Balut, a.k.a. the famous Pinoy delicacy, isn’t on anyone’s bingo cards in this lifetime but apparently, the “Say So” singer is full of surprises.
In her Instagram stories, Doja Cat said, “I named the song ‘Balut’ because it signifies a bird that’s being eaten alive. It’s a metaphor for Twitter stans and the death of Twitter toxicity. The beginning of ‘X’ and the end of ‘tweets.'”
The song itself speaks about the highs and lows of fame, presumably Doja Cat’s own. She sings about her luxury and skills and warns her “copycats” that it’s impossible to copy her level of fame.
While Pinoys were more than happy to be noticed by a rising star in the music industry, they can’t help but point out the error in Doja Cat’s explanation. Balut isn’t snacking on a bird that’s being eaten alive, it’s fertilized duck egg that’s steamed and then eaten directly from the shell.

“Doja Cat, in the first place, the egg is already cooked. You don’t eat it raw,” said one X user.
“Does she think we eat the eggs straight out of the duck cooch because balut is absolutely not eaten alive,” said another.
Others started vehemently defending balut after the delicacy received backlash on social media.
Can y’all stop demonizing a certain food that is part of our culture. Americans are basically eating Mcnuggets made of chicken scraps. https://t.co/h6wLN0MgG8

“Can y’all stop demonizing a certain food that is part of our culture. Americans are basically eating McNuggets made of chicken scraps,” commented one Pinoy.
“Doja Cat naming her song balut has the same energy of a nepo baby owned business that uses Filipino words as a brand name,” said another.

It turns out Doja Cat has indeed tasted our world-famous delicacy and, during her Instagram live, she even mentioned that she knows it’s a fertilized duck egg.
“Balut was good. It reminded me of liver, in a way. […] It’s a small portion, it’s not high fat but I can taste the vitamins in it. Like, you just know that that s*** is good for you, immediately,” she said.

“It’s a fertilized duck egg,” she adds. “I didn’t see the duck inside, necessarily. […] It wasn’t as whimsical as I thought it would be. Like, the full [duck], and there’s feathers, and it’s like, you know, you’re eating a [bird] straight up, it wasn’t like that at all.”
Doja Cat mentioned that she ate all of it, an impressive feat considering balut is a delicacy not for the faint of heart. She also shared that her favorite part of the whole snack was the “egg juice” which she enjoyed with a little bit of vinegar.
