When the world starts to feel like a bit too much, when the rush of it all becomes overwhelming, and you feel like you’re constantly falling behind, there’s a place where you can lose yourself for a while—a cozy hideaway called Cinema ‘76 Film Society.

People usually trot to their nearest mall, head up to the cinema, and settle in for the latest blockbuster. But if I might offer an alternative, Cinema ‘76 is a little theater in the heart of Quezon City—a hidden gem screening the newest foreign and local films, cinephile favorites, and award-winning titles. Located at Tomas Morato cor. Sct. Borromeo St., this small place is a cinephile’s dream.

A little cinema with a lot of history

Cinema ‘76 draws its name from the year 1976, a period often considered the beginning of the “Second Golden Age” of Philippine cinema. It is a micro-cinema founded in 2016 by the producers behind the hit film Heneral Luna.

Tickets cost between P250 and P320 when purchased in-store, which is admittedly a little cheaper than a typical mall cinema ticket. One might think that means the experience must be a little compromised, but when I visited last May, I never once felt like I was getting a lesser experience.

A café is tucked into the space for meals and coffee breaks. It’s by no means tiny, but it still captures the cozy atmosphere of the small cafés scattered around the city.

You can grab a chair, take out your laptop, work on an academic requirement for a bit, or open Slack and hop on a few work calls. Meanwhile, the resident cats—named after famous films, including Luna from Heneral Luna and Quezo from Quezon—contrast your productivity by lazily wandering around the café.

For avid café-hoppers, that might already be enough reason to visit. But the café is only a bonus. The main attraction is, of course, the cinema.

When the room fills with calls from the staff announcing that ticket-holders may now enter the theater, you’re ushered through a black door you probably passed on your way into the café without a second thought. Suddenly, it becomes the gateway to another world.

Leave the world at the door

Stepping into the cinema feels like stepping into your own private nook, away from the hustle and bustle of the café—and the world—outside.

The theater is roomy and spacious, giving you the impression that you’ve stumbled into your own home theater. The air-conditioning blasts from one side of the darkened room as you settle into the squashy couches lining the other, bedecked in shades of blue and orange. Then they play the movie, and the world falls away.

The two hours I spent watching The Devil Wears Prada 2—which was new at the time—really did feel like being fully immersed in a reality that wasn’t mine, away from all the stress and anxiety I carry outside those walls. And isn’t that what going to the cinema is supposed to feel like?

For two or three hours, you’re allowed to lose yourself in a different world. You get a brief respite from everything happening outside, from the responsibilities piling up and the thoughts that keep you up at night. It’s an escape. So why not escape to Cinema ‘76?

And then, you step back outside

When the movie ends, you step through that same black door and back into the complex. Eventually, you make your way outside and breathe in the fresh night air, the heat of the day long gone. Above you, a dark sky stretches seemingly endlessly, and for a moment, so do the possibilities. The world hasn’t changed. Your problems are probably still waiting for you. But somehow, everything feels a little more okay.

And maybe that’s all you needed—a couple of hours away, a good film, and a little place like Cinema ’76 where you could forget about everything for a while.

Then you can take on the world again.
