How to Behave When You See a Celebrity in Public: 8 Do’s and Don’ts

Jul 9, 2024   •   E. Torres

Many Blooms (BINI’s fandom) expressed their concerns after BINI members Aiah and Maloi experienced uncomfortable interactions with some fans while out and about in public. While these situations happen all the time in the entertainment industry, it’s scary to think how people normalize harassing celebrities, forgetting their need for privacy.

Is there a way to make public celebrity encounters fun and memorable? Turns out, it’s easier than toxic fans make it seem! Follow these fan etiquette rules and you’re golden.

1. DO: Be polite

How you behave when you see celebrities reflects on you, not just as a fan but as a human being. Being polite means respecting their personal space, making them more willing to interact. Sometimes, a friendly wave or “hi’ can go a long way in expressing your admiration for them.

2. DON’T: Overreact

We get it. Your idol is in front of you, and every fiber of your being feels giddy. But to avoid becoming an overnight meme online, stay calm and absorb the moment. Who knows when this moment will happen again? Don’t scream or cause a scene. Instead, compliment them sincerely and express how their work inspires you.

3. DO: Ask for permission

Whether you’re asking for an autograph or a selfie with your idol, always ask for permission first. Don’t just grab them and assume they’re okay with doing whatever fan service you have in mind. This includes hugging, patting, or any physical contact.

4. DON’T: Ask invasive questions

Although they’re public figures, celebrities prefer keeping their personal lives off-limits unless they bring it up themselves. Leave it up to the showbiz reporters to ask juicy questions. It’s best to keep the conversation light and respectful to maintain a comfortable atmosphere.

5. DO: Mind the setting

If you see your favorite celebrity in a cafe, airport, or hospital, a good rule of thumb is to let them spend their time peacefully. Celebrities enjoy living like ordinary people.

Before you use the “KUnG aYaW NiLA sa lugAR nA maRAmiNG taO, DapAT sILa aNg mAG-ADjuST!” card, sorry to bruise your ego, but no one—not even celebrities—should put up with your disrespectful attitude in public places.

6. DON’T: Take up too much of their time

Keep the interactions short and sweet. Once your fan-meets-their-ultimate-idol extravaganza is over, this is the part where you let them go on with their day. Yes, they’re entertainers, but come to think of it, even stage performances and concerts have time limits. What makes you believe you’re entitled to hang out with them all day?

7. DON’T: Stalk them. EVER.

This should go without saying, but it bears repeating until these so-called fans come to their senses: don’t stalk your idol’s whereabouts. It’s downright creepy and traumatizing. Trust me when I say your idol will remember you and might be less inclined to engage with other fans.

8. DO: Acknowledge that they’re humans, too

Fame comes with a price. Yet, some fans love to use this as an excuse to justify bad manners. We all deserve to be treated with decency and respect, regardless of our stature or industry.
