Get to Know FIFTY FIFTY: The Group Behind Tiktok’s Viral ‘Cupid’ Trend

Apr 13, 2023   •   Edgardo Toledo

If you’re on TikTok, there’s a high chance you’ve heard this retro-style track that belts out ~*I gave a second chance to Cupid*~. That’s actually K-pop girl group Fifty Fifty’s (stylized FIFTY FIFTY) latest single “Cupid,” which currently has TikTok in a chokehold. The song has been used in thousands of TikTok videos, and the numbers continue to pile up!

Fifty Fifty’s four talented ladies, Saena, Keena, Sio, and Aran are making a name for themselves and proving that dreams do come true as long as you never stop chasing them. Whether you’re a solid fan or a casual listener, we compiled some facts about the newest ~*it girls*~ of K-pop boulevard.

The Grammys recognized Fifty Fifty as one of this year’s promising K-pop girl groups

The fact that a new act (from a small company, at that) like Fifty Fifty caught the Recording Academy’s attention is a sure sign of the female quartet’s star power. The Grammy article lauded the group’s “various colors and a vocal maturity,” and deemed them capable of capturing any audience with their magical appeal.

“Cupid” charted on the Billboard Hot 100

Fifty Fifty joins the elite club of K-pop stars like BTS, Twice, and Blackpink who’ve landed on the Billboard Hot 100. Their viral hit “Cupid” debuted at number 100, thanks to the millions and millions of streams across music platforms. We know this is just the beginning of their winning era, so way to go, girls!

Fifty Fifty has also landed on the Spotify charts!

From one global chart to another, it looks like Fifty Fifty’s streaming prowess continues to reach greater heights. Their English version of “Cupid” cracked the top 10 on Spotify’s Global Chart, which currently has over 69 million streams. On top of that, Fifty Fifty’s monthly listeners on the platform are now over 16 million.

They released an English version of “Cupid”

Since “Cupid” became a hit, the group released an English version called “Cupid (Twin version),” for those who want to sing along without butchering the Korean language. Either way, both the Korean and English interpretations are bops.

The group’s name has a significant and special meaning

It may surprise you, but most K-pop group names aren’t just a bunch of letters pieced together to sound ~*cool*~. They also hold special meanings, like Fifty Fifty, which represents “life with a 50% chance of dream and a 50% chance of reality.” The name also embodies a bond with their fans, with the first “Fifty” representing the girls and the other “Fifty” signifying the fans. Isn’t that sweet?

Fifty Fifty wants to dabble in genres like hip-hop and rock

The girls of Fifty Fifty may be newcomers, but don’t let this fool you because they’re not afraid to go outside their comfort bubble. The group said they want to pull off an old-school hip-hop choreography or try out a rock band music concept. If they suit up for any of those styles, fans would be thrilled to see it for sure!

Artists in their own right

Even though K-pop idols are often unfairly called “manufactured” or “investments,” Fifty Fifty wants to break out of that by showcasing more of their talents. Aside from being the group’s main dancer, Saena wants to try her hands at music production. Meanwhile, Sio and Aran both have mesmerizing vocals. And then there’s Keena, who co-wrote the lyrics for “Cupid.” Truly a talented bunch!

Convinced that this might be your next K-pop girl group obsession? Stream“Cupid” while waiting for Fifty Fifty’scomeback!
