This young Pinoy’s magnificent invention has put the microscopic world at everyone’s fingertips. Make-roscope is a single-lens keychain microscope that can be used with smartphones and tablets. Pinoys, especially students, who don’t have access to heavy-duty microscopes can now use de Leon’s mini laboratory on the go.
In an interview, 28-year-old inventor Jeremy de Leon said that his Make-roscope proves “innovation can be affordable, cheap, simple, and especially intuitive, ensuring that no Filipino student gets left behind.” Here’s how this impressive tool works.
“What I have today is the first keychain microscope. It is very small, very light, it has no moving parts, only bending parts, and it is not made out of metal, this one is high-quality silicone,” de Leon explained during a press conference.
The set-up is easy: All you have to do is place the Make-roscope on top of your smartphone or tablet’s front camera to act as a viewfinder. Place the slides and you can either take pictures, videos, or simply observe what you see. The Make-roscope can magnify sample slides from 125x to an impressive 400x.
He invented the tool when he graduated Manufacturing Engineering from Mapua University as a way to solve the lack of resources and laboratory equipment in the Philippine schools. De Leon said that instead of having 10 students share one microscope, “with Make-roscope, it’s possible to have one for each student.”

You don’t have to shell out a huge amount of cash to get your hands on this keychain microscope. It’s available on Shopee and Lazada starting at *drum roll* only P399. The Make-roscopes are available in Explorer, Starter, and Laboratory Kits.
Inside the Make-roscope Laboratory Kit’s high-quality tin can is one keychain Make-roscope plus a pipette, centrifuge, glass slides, blank slides, cotton swabs, tweezers, and more. It’s everything a student would need for a mini laboratory on the go.
If the kit you want is currently sold out, you can pre-order from Jeremake’s website for a late October shipping or follow Make-roscope by Jeremake on Facebook for restock updates.
De Leon’s Make-roscope is so revolutionary that it even snagged the top prize at the Philippine leg of the James Dyson Award (JDA) He will receive P330,000 which he can use to further his invention. De Leon will progress to the international stage of the competition where he will be up against other awardees from different countries.
He shared that his invention has helped over 3,000 Filipinos and students to date. Now that more people are aware of de Leon’s invention, he can expect that number to rise over the next few years.
