Get Hyped! The 8 Most Exciting Games for PlayStation 5

Jun 15, 2020   •   Matthew Arcilla

After months and months of teasing, Sony has at last revealed the PlayStation 5, the much-anticipated next generation successor to the PlayStation brand of consoles. While the general consensus from developers has been that the Xbox Series X will boast higher resolutions and greater frame-rates, the PlayStation 5 boasts custom components that ensures faster loading times and greater asset streaming. The result is a nimble console that wields game resources with greater agility.

Of course, none of that means anything without actual games to play and the PlayStation 5 reveal event — dubbed “The Future of Gaming” by Sony — delivered with a handful of exciting titles, many of which proudly showcase some of the next generation enhancements that have been spoken about for years leading up to this generation. Here are the eight most exciting games that Sony announced via the online reveal.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

2018’s Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4 was an incredible critical and commercial success, and developer Insomniac Games is following that up with a standalone story that focuses on the hip, young, black counterpart to Peter Parker. Spider-Man: Miles Morales will also harness the power of the new console to create a lightning fast web-swinging experience with enhanced visuals and character models.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Another Insomniac Games joint brings the studio’s flagship creation – the engineer feline hero and his diminuitive robot sidekick – from one dimension to another. Rift Apart shows off the technology of the PlayStation 5 at its most astounding with amazing ray-traced lighting and high speed world streaming that makes Ratchet & Clank bouncing from one place to another a sight to behold.

Stray

From Annapurna Interactive and BlueTwelve Studio is a game where humans have died off and been replaced by robots. In Stray, you play a backpack wearing kitty, crossing roads, climbing pipes and entering buildings trying to make their way through a neon-lit post-human metropolis inspired by the Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

From Tango Gameworks, the Tokyo-based studio run by Resident Evil co-creator Shinji Mikami comes this spooky action adventure game. In the wake of a devastating paranormal event, most of the population of Tokyo has vanished, and the city is overrun by vengeful spirits. To stop them you’ll need to harness your own supernatural abilities.

Bugsnax

From Young Horses, the creators of OctoDad: Dadliest Catch, is a silly game about an island where food and ingredients have come to life as insects. You arrive at the island at the invitation of an intrepid explorer, and must solve the mystery of why Bugsnax taste so good. With every bite of a Bugsnax, people transform. Snack time is great until your hand turns into a hotdog.

Resident Evil Village

Capcom continues its hot streak of a Resident Evil franchise reinvigorated by games like 2019’s Resident Evil 2 Remake and 2017’s Resident Evil VII. Resident Evil Village is the eighth installment in the mainline series of Resident Evil games and sees Ethan Winters drawn back into the frightful conspiracy fraught web of Blue Umbrella. To get answers he must seek out a mysterious village haunted by werewolves.

Deathloop

From Arkane Studios, the developers behind the fan favorite Dishonored series of clockpunk stealth adventures, comes a game in which victory requires you to die, die, die again. On a decadent but lawless island, you must find a way to put an end to the timeloop that leaves you forever hunted by its inhabitants. As you struggle to take out eight key targets before the clock resets, a rival assassin works to keep the loop going.

Horizon: Forbidden West

From Guerrilla Games, originally best known for the Killzone series, is the sequel to 2017’s breakout open world science fiction game, Horizon: Zero Dawn. Protagonist Aloy returns, this time investigating a plague that is causing local wildlife to die off. The muscle of the PlayStation 5 is on full display here, showcasing ray-traced flora and fauna, detailed grasslands and stunning underwater exploration.

Which of these games are you most excited for?
