Nintendo Switch fans, it’s finally happening: the Switch 2 is coming soon, with a trailer for the much-awaited console dropping last night. While Nintendo hasn’t revealed all the juicy details yet, here’s what we can infer from the little information we do have. Here are 8 things we know (or think we know) about the new console so far:
It looks like Nintendo is upgrading to magnetic joy-cons, making it easier to slap them on and off (compared to the often finicky sliding mechanism of the original Switch).
Although we don’t have the exact dimensions yet, we already know from the trailer that the Switch 2’s screen will be bigger than the original’s 6.2 inches.
Yes, Switch 2 is (almost certainly) laying out the welcome mat for your existing Switch library. Early reports suggest semi-backward compatibility, meaning you can carry over most* of your favorite Switch games to the new console.
*According to the trailer, certain Switch games might not be supported or fully compatible.
This might seem like a minor detail, but having two USB-C ports (one on top and one on the bottom) means you can charge your Switch 2 while it’s docked and still use wired controllers. Will this small adjustment make your life infinitely easier? For sure.
Remember that flimsy little kickstand from the OG Switch? Well, meet its older, wiser sibling. The new console is reportedly going all in with a bigger, sturdier kickstand. Perfect for impromptu gaming sessions with friends!
Here’s an intriguing one: the trailer suggests a mouse-like control scheme might make its way to the new joy-cons. What will this feature be used for? Will it be compatible with old games? We can only speculate for now.
We don’t have the official specs yet, but according to leaks, the Nintendo Switch 2 will probably be faster than the Steam Deck(!!!).
Fans were hoping that the new console would be released in March, but based on the tour dates of the Switch 2 Experience, which will let the general public experience the console ahead of its release, it looks like it will be closer to June or even sometime in Q3.

Looks like the Switch 2 will be the hot ticket item for holiday shopping this year. If you’re worried about the availability of the console, here’s some good news: Nintendo seems to be bracing themselves for the high demand. Bloomberg reports that Nintendo’s current supply chain will allow the company to ship out 20 million units of the new console in 2025.
As for the price, we won’t know for sure until the official announcement, but according to rumors, the Switch 2 will retail for $399.99 USD.
Better start saving up now!
Nintendo will be unveiling the Switch 2 on April 2, 2025. Mark your calendars!
