There was a local Twitter party last weekend and it wasn’t because of Halloween. Pinoy K-pop fans showed their sense of humor by getting together and pulling a joke involving famous K-pop idols, Filipino actor Paolo Contis, and an exhibit in South Korea. Get in on the joke and find out what happened!
What a shock it must have been for Contis to wake up and find that his name was once again trending online. Just a few weeks ago, the same thing happened but for a completely different reason — his split with actress LJ Reyes which he admitted involved a third party. A few weeks after that, the issue was buried under another celebrity couple’s fiasco (Kylie Padilla/Aljur Abrenica/AJ Raval). But in any case, it must be a shock to find himself trending again questioning if he did something wrong or if netizens somehow found dirt on him. Well, none of the above, Contis.
Paolo Contis acknowledges his lookalike.
Contis’ name trended for a completely bizarre reason: he resembles an artwork that’s currently displayed at a famous museum in Seoul, South Korea. To be exact, the “Mask II” by Australian artist Ron Mueck at the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art. The sculpture was finished in 2001, a self-portrait of Mueck magnified but without sacrificing realism. To Filipinos who grew up seeing Contis on TV, the resemblance cannot be denied. And yes, you may laugh.
Which K-pop idols have paid the Mask II — this Contis lookalike — a visit? Let’s start with Blackpink’s vocalist and lead dancer, Rosé. She’s pretending to whisper into the sleeping giant’s ear. “Careful not to wake him up!” one fan commented on Instagram.
And then we have the dashing idol-slash-actor Cha Eunwoo acting goofy behind the hollow sculpture. Looking at it now, we’re reminded of Attack on Titan. A possible remake with Eunwoo as Armin perhaps?

BTS’ Jung Hoseok a.k.a. j-hope uploaded his own video walking behind the sleeping Mask II. It’s actually his post that launched Paolo Contis into the trending spot on Twitter. ARMYs were rejoicing that they unexpectedly got the j-hope and Paolo Contis in one frame, a true Halloween miracle.
Following his band member’s post, BTS’ Kim Taehyung a.k.a. V also posted a photo of himself with Mask II. His might be the most creative post so far.
Goofy Filipinos had fun referencing inside jokes and getting excited that Contis get to have a photo with their favorites before them.
