‘The Princess Diaries’ Cast: Where Are They Now?

Nov 21, 2022   •   Kyzia Maramara

Twenty-one years later, The Princess Diaries remains a cult classic. So many people still reference Princess Mia Thermopolis’ iconic line (“Me? A princess? Shut up!), recreate her curly-to-straight hair makeover, and even dress up as her for Halloween. And now everyone’s excited all over again since it’s been confirmed that The Princess Diaries 3 is in the works. Although there is no casting news as of writing, all of our fingers are crossed that the OG Princess Diaries cast gets to reprise their roles. But what have they been up to since we first saw them on our screens in 2001?

Anne Hathaway (Princess Mia Thermopolis)

Let’s start with the star, the princess, and the legend herself — Anne Hathaway. Her role as Mia Thermopolis was her first feature film and it immediately cemented Hathaway as one of the best actresses of her generation. Can you believe she was just 18 when she filmed the movie? Fast forward to 2022 and she’s now 40 years old. But what’s even more astounding is if you compare her photos, Hathaway looks like she has never aged a day.

Since The Princess Diaries, Hathaway has worked in Ella Enchanted (2004), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Love & Other Drugs (2010), Les Misérables (2012), Ocean’s Eight (2018), and so many more! Her illustrious career as a once-in-a-generation actress is far from over too since she’s currently working on at least seven movies.

Julie Andrews (Queen Clarisse Renaldi)

Julie Andrews already had a number of awards under her belt for her work in movies like The Sound of Music (1965) and Mary Poppins (1964) before she joined The Princess Diaries. She added another iconic role to the list with her stint as the queen of Genovia. As for whether she’s going to reprise her role in Princess Diaries 3, Andrews says she is not sure.

“Honestly, I doubt it because I’m that much older, and Annie Hathaway’s that much older,” she said in an interview with Jimmy Fallon. “There was talk about it many many years ago but I think it’s gone too far now. I’d be thrilled if it would happen but I can’t think what the story would be now.”

After the 2000s, Andrews mostly starred in movies where she voiced iconic characters. She was the narrator for Enchanted (2007) and voiced the Queen in three out of four Shrek movies (looks like royalty follows her career!). Andrews is also the voice for Lady Whistledown from Netflix hit series Bridgerton.

Chris Pine (Nicholas Deveraux)

Did you know Chris Pine’s character wasn’t in the OG Princess Diaries novels? He was created for the second Princess Diaries movie — Princess Mia was supposed to end up with someone else. But we speak for everyone when we say the bookworms don’t mind. Pine’s charming face brought so much kilig to hearts everywhere anyway.

After Princess Diaries in 2004 (one could argue it launched his career), Pine went on to star in dozens of hit movies. His list includes the Star Trek series, Wonder Woman movies, Just My Luck (2008), and Don’t Worry Darling (2022).

Mandy Moore (Lana Thomas)

Mandy Moore played Lana Thomas in The Princess Diaries, the token popular cheerleader bully. In a recent interview, Moore said that since she wasn’t part of the second movie, it would be hard to believe that her character would come back for the third time. But she says she’s excited to watch Princess Diaries 3 regardless.

In 2002, Moore became better known as Jamie Sullivan, her character from A Walk to Remember. Since then, she has starred in movies like Chasing Liberty (2004), lent her voice to Rapunzel in the Tangled (2010) movie, and was part of the series This is Us (2016-2022) where she earned a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination. Moore is also an equally talented singer and is currently touring around the US.

Robert Schwartzman (Michael Moscovitz)

If The Princess Diaries fans have that one boy that got away, it would be the lovely Michael Moscovitz, the brother of Princess Mia’s best friend. In Meg Cabot’s books, Mia marries her long-time love Michael, a scene we’ve been robbed of in the movies. While the second movie did end with Pine’s character professing his love for Mia, we’re still holding out hope Michael gets the girl in the end. Besides, we want to see Robert Schwartzman on screen again — look at how hot handsome he’s become.

Schwartzman did not star in many titles after his stint as Michael. But you can catch him in films like The Virgin Suicides (1999) directed by his cousin, Sofia Coppola, Lost Transmissions (2019), and It Happened in LA (2017).

Hector Elizondo

Via IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes

Hector Elizondo has been acting since 1963 and is still part of films and series in the present. You can just imagine the contents of this guy’s resume! He plays Joe in the Princess Diaries films, the royal bodyguard who is also Queen Clarisse’s first and true love. They got married in the end after the Queen herself proposed to him. Will we get Elizondo as Joe in the third movie? Only time will tell.

Elizondo was part of series such as Chicago Hope (1994-2000) and Last Man Standing (2011-2021). His filmography list includes Pretty Woman (1990), Runaway Bride (1999), and Valentine’s Day (2010) where he once again shares the screen with Hathaway.

Heather Matarazzo (Lilly Moscovitz)

Via IMDb, Instagram: Heather Matarazzo

Princess Mia’s eccentric best friend was portrayed by actress Heather Matarazzo (who clarifies that she isn’t related to Stranger Things actor Gaten Matarazzo). We’re hoping for the dynamic duo’s on-screen reunion for the third movie. After all, where would Mia be if not for the guidance and help of her best friend?

Since the movies, Matarazzo has starred in series including Law & Order, Grey’s Anatomy, and Exes & Ohs.

Erik von Detten (Josh Bryant)

Via IMDb, Instagram: Angela von Detten

Josh Bryant is the school heartthrob, Lana Thomas’s ex-boyfriend, and Princess Mia’s crush. That is until he shows his true colors and it’s revealed he’s just using our princess for clout. Erik von Detten did a good job making the ladies swoon but honestly, we don’t think he’ll be included in the upcoming Princess Diaries cast. von Detten has kept a low profile (to the point of nonexistence) on social media so it’s difficult to dig deets for him but we do know he’s happily married and has two kids.

Von Detten voiced Sid in Toy Story 3 (2010) and appeared in series like Charmed, Dinotopia (2002-2003), and Complete Savages (2004-2005).
