Is ‘Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo’ Finally Getting a Second Season?

May 5, 2020   •   Ina Louise Manto

When looking for K-Dramas for a good cry or one that would just break your heart, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo is a must-see. It’s a 2016 period drama that tells the story of a modern-day woman who drowns in a lake and wakes up in the Goryeo Dynasty (938-1392). She wakes up as a cousin of an aristocrat and later befriends the dynasty’s princes, who end up loving her. But like all good things, it must come to an end; she eventually returns to her normal life. But is it the ending we deserve? Will we finally get a second season?

Though Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo had lower ratings in South Korea, the K-drama had large audiences in neighboring countries. Ratings from the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia showed how much viewers enjoyed the drama. It even became one of the most anticipated dramas in China in 2016, with over 300 million views in its first three episodes. It’s rare for Korean dramas to have a second season but fans have been consistent in demanding another one, even four years after its finale.

Hints from Lee Joon Gi

One of the main reasons why fans remain hopeful for a second season is because of Lee Joon Gi or the 4th Prince Wang So’s posts on his personal Instagram account. Are they hints?

Are we finally getting a continuation of Wang So and Hae Soo’s story? P.S. Fans went wild after these photos were released a few days ago.

But why does the drama keep on resurfacing on the trends list from time to time?

The cast is A+

The chemistry among the cast is a great factor for a successful drama. Do you know that feeling when the acting seems forced or the cast just don’t go well together? Well, that doesn’t happen in Moon Lovers. You will be drawn in their relationships because they acted like one big family — enough to make you feel kilig, laugh, and most importantly, cry.

Moon Lovers‘ leads are Lee Joon Gi, who gained popularity in his role in The King and the Clown (2005), and IU, an idol-slash-actress. She’s known for her roles in the hit 2019 drama Hotel del Luna and Dream High in 2011.

But can we talk about the princes though? Admit it, you had crushes on them for days! If I were to get stranded in a thousand years-old period but have these cuties around me, I wouldn’t want to leave.

From left to right: Nam Joo Hyuk as the 13th Prince, Hong Jong Hyun as the 3rd Prince, Yoon Sun Woo as the 9th Prince, Lee Joon Gi as the 4th Prince, EXO Baekhyun as the 10th Prince, Ji Soo as the 14th Prince, and Kang Ha Neul (bottom) as the 8th Prince.

How lucky was Hae Soo to be surrounded by these good-looking princes? Who was your favorite prince?

These pairings. Period.

“how much do you want to hurt the viewers?”

Though the princes mostly showed their humorous and fun personalities, we saw their other sides from their love interests. From the 10th Prince’s tragic story with his wife to the 14th Prince’s unrequited love, these pairings were enough to clog our noses and make our eyes swell from too much crying.

The OST slaps

If you pay attention to or appreciate OSTs in dramas, then you’ll get hooked with Moon Lover’s! The songs are very catchy and have appearances from classic OST singers like EXO Chen, Punch, and Taeyeon.

The legendary fight scene

Moon Lovers is indeed heartbreaking but that doesn’t mean it’s like that throughout the series. It’s going to make you laugh: from the princes’ silly humor to scenes like this one. Hae Soo and Prince Wang Eun made up and developed a sibling relationship afterward though. But legend says they continue to fight in real life, on the charts, as both IU and Baekhyun are singers.

Something to look forward to: Both are releasing new music this month! IU is releasing a new song in collaboration with BTS Suga while Baekhyun will release his second solo album at the end of the month.

Us after the last episode: SOBRANG BITIN! Did we get the ending the characters deserve? Or was it a hint that we should look forward to a second season? One thing’s for sure though: four years later, we still can’t get over it. To be honest, at this point, Scarlet Heart keeps on trending mainly because fans still haven’t gotten over it yet.

But… let’s not get our hopes up

Lee Joon Gi’s photos posing in front of an old palace aren’t hints for an upcoming second season of Moon Lovers. Sigh. It’s actually for his new drama, Flower of Evil, which is expected to be released in July. It’s his comeback drama after being absent from our screens for two years. Though he has been teasing with photos that may be related to the iconic drama, let’s not get our hopes up. Instead, let’s support Joon Gi in his new drama, as well as the other casts’ endeavors! And again, K-dramas continuing for more than one season is rare in South Korea.

For now, we can only rewatch the drama for the nth time, support the cast, and hope that the heavens hear our prayers and be finally blessed with a second season.
