Loved K-Drama ‘My Name’? Here Are 8 Shows You Should Add to Your Watch List

Nov 2, 2021   •   Meryl Medel

Korean drama My Name has stayed on Netflix’s daily list of Top Ten most watched films and shows in the Philippines and around the world — and for good reason. Created by Kim Ba-da and directed by Kim Jin-min, this gritty crime thriller has eight episodes packed with action sequences and revenge plots, led by rising star Han So-hee. My Name follows the orphaned Yoon Ji-woo, who is out for blood after her father was killed in front of her. She goes undercover in both the corrupt police force and the powerful underworld organizations, all so she could take revenge on the man responsible for her father’s death. If you liked the gritty dark crime action-packed female-led drama, then you should add these to your watch list, too.

Extracurricular (2020)

Coming from the same director as My Name, ten-episode Extracurricular follows top student Oh Ji-soo who runs an illegal business to earn money for his everyday expenses. Wealthy heiress Bae Gyu-ri finds out his secret, and he ends up letting her in. Everything seems well, until another classmate of theirs gets caught. If you enjoyed the noir feel of My Name and a main character’s dip into the underworld, you would love the similar vibe of Extracurricular from the same director.

Watch it on Netflix.

Voice (2017 – 2021)

This crime thriller series follows emergency call center and dispatch team members, who work together to fight against crimes using their specialization in acoustics and voice profiling. If you loved the thrilling crime-solving aspect of My Name, you would enjoy the similar aspect of Voice.

Watch it on Viu.

Kill It (2019)

Animal lover and veterinarian Kim Soo-hyun looks so nice and approachable, but he actually hides his true identity as a mysterious elite assassin with the cleanest and most precise method. Race, age, or name, no one knows anything about him. After detective Do Hyun-jin chases him with a mysterious case that links them, Kim Soo-hyun must now kill for the sake of his family. If you’re a fan of the action-packed scenes with a high body count, you would enjoy this crime thriller series.

Watch it on Viu.

Killing Eve (2018 – present)

Helmed by actress-producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge from Fleabag, action-adventure drama Killing Eve puts the spotlight on two women: office worker-turned-spy Eve and assassin Villanelle. The two become obsessed with each other, leading to a game of cat-and-mouse (much like Yoon Ji-woo and her father’s murderer). If you’re a fan of the cat-and-mouse chase in My Name, you would enjoy seeing Eve and Villanelle do the same across the world.

Night in Paradise (2020)

After the brutal murder of his family, a mobster takes revenge against their murderer, with the aftermath requiring him to take refuge in Jeju Island. There, he befriends a terminally ill woman, whose life he must protect from the past threatening to hunt him down. If you loved the revenge plot of My Name, this film has it in spades.

Watch it on Netflix.

Giri/Haji (2019)

This English-Japanese noir crime thriller series follows Tokyo detective Kenzo Mori who finds himself in London to search for his missing brother. Mori is looking for his brother to find out whether he really murdered the nephew of a Yakuza member. But before he’s able to do that, Mori needs to dive deep into the dangerous waters of London’s criminal underworld, all while providing for his family in Japan and trying to stop a gang war from breaking out in Tokyo. If you’re a fan of the thrilling chase in My Name, you would enjoy this bilingual series.

Watch it on Netflix.

Flower of Evil (2020)

Couple Baek Hee-sung and Cha Ji-won live a picture-perfect life with their daughter. But not all is as it seems, when detective Cha Ji-won encounters a series of unexplained murders that make her question her seemingly perfect and devoted husband. If you enjoyed the thrilling crime-solving mystery of My Name, you will love the intricate investigation and mysterious threads in Flower of Evil.

Watch it on iQiyi.

Mr. Sunshine (2018)

In the late 1800s Joseon, Korean orphan turned American Marine Corps officer Eugene Choi returns to Joseon for a mission. There, he falls in love with aristocrat Go Ae-sin, who moonlights as a sniper for the Righteous Army. If you loved the strong female lead with a tragic past of My Name, you would find a similar character out for justice and revenge in Mr. Sunshine on a grander scale.

Watch it on Netflix.
