After a month of obsessing over Stranger Things, fans finally got the last two episodes that we’ve all been eagerly awaiting. But as with most season finales of this show, it’s not always a happy ending for everyone. It’s more heartbreaking this time with how uncertain the future of the Hawkins gang — and the whole world — is. And we can’t even get over the deaths from Season 4 yet. Before it aired, we tried to guess who will die in the Stranger Things season finale, and we think we got pretty close. Here’s a list of the characters we’ve confirmed dead — and a couple of characters whose fate we’re unsure of — in Stranger Things Season 4.
[BIG SPOILERS AHEAD]
We thought he was gone after the first season, but Eleven’s “Papa” even had a whole episode named after him in Season 4. Dr. Martin Brenner was still the same ol’ Papa who pushed Eleven and her powers to her limits. Sure, he he was instrumental in helping Eleven get her powers back and recovering her memories about One, but he still didn’t listen to her and even forced her to stick to his plan.
When a rival government faction raided their hideout, Brenner tried to get away with Eleven, only to be shot down in the process. Awaiting his death, he asked Eleven if she understood that he did love her and he did what he did for her. Unfortunately for him, all Eleven gave him is a tearful goodbye, and Brenner breathed his last exhale alone.
Yeah, that closed caption that says “Jason howls in agony” and his body basically disintegrating after the Upside Down gate opened confirmed his death.
Do we have to talk about his death? In an ideal world, Eddie would have been able to draw the demobats away from the gate to the real world, biked away to safety while the demobats got called away by Vecna, and reunited with his best bud Dustin.
Unfortunately, this show likes hurting us. His death traumatized every fan the same way that Bob’s did. And that final goodbye scene with Dustin? “You’re gonna have to look after those little sheep for me, okay?” We can’t even see the screen with how much crying we did.
We last see the good doctor in the underground bunker handcuffed to a metal post. After being left behind by Brenner, he got caught by Lt. Colonel Jack Sullivan, but we never did see his fate after that. There’s a high chance he’s still alive. And well, we’re hoping he’s still alive, because the Hawkins gang are going to need all the help they can get — including an in with the government — after Vecna opened the gate between the real world and the Upside Down.
Max definitely got Vecna’d — as in her eyes were bleeding and two of her limbs got snapped like twigs while her mind was stuck in Vecna’s mind lair. But Eleven pushed Vecna away from Max in the mind lair, while Nancy, Steve, and Robin flambéed Vecna’s body in the Upside Down.
However, that wasn’t enough. Max still died in Lucas’ arms, and the Upside Down gate is now completely open. Eleven couldn’t accept Max’s death, so she uses her god-like powers to basically bring Max back to life. But her power has limits, so Max is in a coma with an uncertain future. And we don’t know if she’ll ever wake up.
