A new meme is trending, and it’s all thanks to this Tweet about the most recent typhoon that hit the Philippines.
THE FILIPINO SPIRIT: A man submerged in floodwater in Marikina City manages to flash a smile despite his difficult situation. Filipinos are known for their resiliency especially since the country is hit by more than 20 typhoons every year. pic.twitter.com/8232Gj9ANH

To put it simply, no one was pleased with the copywriter’s word choices.
When a nation becomes so used to extremely flooded streets caused by rains and typhoons that hit us year after year, and nothing is done to improve the situation so we would never have to experience these floods again, can you still call that “resiliency” when it should be “lack of disaster preparedness”, “the government’s lack of accountability”, and “poor urban planning”?
As always, the Pinoys have coped with the sad reality of having our plight romanticized yet again by mainstream media by posting memes on Twitter that mock the photo caption. Here are the best ones we’ve found:
THE FILIPINO SPIRIT: A man manages to flash a smile despite his difficult situation. Filipinos are known for their resiliency especially since there are 131,530 inmates spread across 466 jails nationwide. The jails have a collective capacity of only 20,399 inmates. pic.twitter.com/uF7YwlN3xl
