Turns out there’s trouble in paradise for our favorite Wildcat couple, and the realization is like a bucket of iced tea imported from England poured all over our childhood. It’s canon: Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montes (Vanessa Hudgens) are in couples therapy. Some of the East High Wildcats had a mini reunion for the fourth season of Disney+ Series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (HSMTMTS) and they revealed everyone’s fates 15 years after graduating the musical halls of East High.

HSMTMTS featured some of the OG HSM cast including Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu), Taylor McKessie (Monique Coleman), Ryan Evans (Lucas Grabeel), and Martha Cox (Kaycee Stroh). Sadly, Zac, Vanessa, and Ashley Tisdale who played Sharpay Evans weren’t able to swing by.

Chad, then, spills the much-anticipated tea during the first episode. “It is our 15-year high school reunion. My character, Chad, is married to Taylor. Martha is a world-class choreographer. Troy and Gabriella are now in couple’s therapy. Ryan is happily partnered with twins on the way, and the future of the East High drama department is on the line,” he said.

And if you’re curious about Sharpay, HSMTMTS creator Tim Federle said she’s doing phenomenal on her own: “She’s now a full CEO and I think she’s a Goop competitor that’s about to IPO,” he said. “I think she’s a businesswoman, of course.”

These are only a few short and simple sentences, but it rocked the world of every HSM fan. It’s great that most of them are thriving but what happened to Troy and Gabriella? Did they follow in the footsteps of their actors?

To recall, Zac and Vanessa dated IRL too, sometime during filming the first movie but called it quits after five years due to “Zac’s intense filming schedule.”

While many were surprised that their favorite couple are in couples therapy, many weren’t. “Well she did break up with him and leave every movie so that’s believable,” said one X user.

“Why are they ruining a happy ending that was made over a decade ago?” asked another to which a fellow X user pointed out that “couples therapy isn’t a bad thing.”

Meanwhile, another X user had a plausible theory about why Troy and Gabriella ended that way. “The showrunners punishing Troy and Gabriella [because] Zac and Vanessa didn’t answer their calls. I’m sick,” they said.

But was our childhood ruined? Or did Troy and Gabriella show us that life isn’t all rainbows and butterflies? Pulling a basketball heartthrob with a heart of gold and a voice to match or a beautiful brainiac doesn’t mean you’ll be handed a happily ever after. In fact, as one person on X pointed out, “A lot of high school sweethearts be out here miserable AF.”
