2017 is looking to be a great year for cinema goers. A line-up of anticipated sequels, origin stories, and blasts from the past have us giddy with excitement. Better start saving up for weekend movie dates because these upcoming blockbusters are not to be missed!
.
We are familiar with the multicolored spandex-clad heroes of our youth and their Mighty Morphin theme song, but this reboot by Dean Israelite is nothing like what we remember. Power Rangers joins the ranks of the dark and gritty reboots like Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but is still “playful” that avid fans and younger audiences won’t be completely thrown off. So yes, you can still expect to see cute little kids dressed as mini Rangers.
.
Speaking of Transformers, after three years of silence from the Autobots, Michael Bay assumes that the world needs a fifth movie (probably to redeem himself from the 2014 cinematic flop he delivered). The Last Knight looks interesting enough, though, as it explores the medieval setting and aims to shed light on the origin of the Autobots we loved. But until it shows on the big screen, we’re withholding further judgment.
.
Despite allegations of white-washing, nothing changes the fact that geeks everywhere are hotly anticipating the release of Ghost in the Shell in theaters. It retains the eerie visual imagery of the hit anime that we probably won’t be able to resist witnessing the live-action rendition on the big screen. Plus, it would be interesting to find out if Hollywood’s latest blockbuster sweetheart would be able to pull off the role.
.
The Cars 3 trailer caught everyone completely off-guard. But the preview of the mysterious wreckage is enough for those who dropped out from the fandom after the not-so amazing Cars 2 to come running back to the franchise.
.
We are definitely loving what we’ve seen so far with this retelling of the Disney Princess classic. By using the same songs (and more!), adding more depth to the characters, and casting the brilliant Emma Watson (the obvious choice for Belle), Beauty and the Beast is set to be this year’s talk of the town.
.
Thankfully we didn’t have to wait too long post-Rogue One for another film release from the Star Wars franchise, although Episode VIII won’t be until December. It picks up where The Force Awakens left off so we’ll be seeing Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac real soon. It will also be the last time we’ll be able to watch the late Carrie Fisher on the big screen.
.
The LEGO film franchise makes a comeback with a hilarious take on comic book’s darkest hero. We were already well-acquainted with him and his doucheyness in the first movie, although it’s unclear whether the two films are connected. Who knows, he might not be so douchey this time around? We’ll definitely keep our eyes peeled for all the Batman jokes and references when this comes out!
.
We’re hooked on a feeling that the widely-acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is going to be epic! We’re still pretty high from the 2014 film, and we are even more hyped for Volume 2. We can expect the same crazy action, zinging humor, a dash of seriousness, and incredible soundtrack—with an added touch of cuteness (thanks to Baby Groot). Hopefully, this film will not be a letdown (even though we’re pretty sure at this point it won’t).
