Zayn Malik Finally Opens Up About Why He Left One Direction and We Now Miss Them Even More

The world was never the same again after One Direction came in with swoon-worthy hits like “What Makes You Beautiful” and “One Thing.” Composed of Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles, the pop-quintet was everywhere, from mobile phones to beverages and even Wattpad fanfictions!
But despite their overwhelming success, nobody was prepared to see the group go on indefinite hiatus, with each member pursuing their solo career. With everything that has happened, Zayn’s recent interview sheds new light on what happened with One Direction.
What happened to One Direction?
In a sit-down interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Zayn talked about being part of One Direction and his departure from the boyband in 2015. The 30-year-old British singer-songwriter revealed he knew One Direction’s drawing to a close when the others refused to sign new contracts.
“I knew something was happening, so I just got ahead of the curve,” Zayn shared. “I was like, ‘I’m just going to get out of here, I think this is done.’”
He admitted that even though One Direction “got sick of each other” after being together for five years, they were a close bunch. “We were close. We’ve done crazy things with each other that nobody else in the world will ever understand, and I look back on it now in a much fonder light.”

It’s been almost a decade since we last saw One Direction on one stage together, but nobody can deny that they’re still one of the most followed artists even to this day. And the overwhelming reactions from netizens prove that more. Many empathized with Zayn, considering the British boyband went through every phase of growing up together with little to no personal space.

Some said that One Direction was overworked and that they certainly needed a break from everything.

Liam Payne apologizes to his former bandmates
A couple of days ago, former One Direction member Liam Payne posted a YouTube video where he gave his fans the lowdown on everything happening in this life. He also went on to say sorry over the controversial statements he made back in 2022 on Logan Paul’s podcast about his former bandmates, saying:
“My own frustrations with my own career and where I kind of landed, I took shots at everybody else, which is wrong, so obviously I want to apologize for that in the first instance because that’s definitely not me,” he said.
Liam also revealed his former bandmates stood by him when he needed them the most, including Zayn. The YouTube vlog comes after the “Strip That Down” singer went into a rehab facility. Liam is now six months sober.
