After weeks of waiting, the Sussexes’ interview with Oprah has finally dropped. In the interview, Harry and Meghan opened up about their relationship with the royal family and why they decided to leave the royal family and the UK. Here are some of the biggest highlights from Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah.
Let’s start with the good news, shall we? The Sussexes are having a baby girl!
“To have a boy then a girl — what more can you ask for?” Harry said, adding, “Having any child, any one or a two would have been amazing, but to have a boy and then a girl . . . now we’ve got our family and we’ve got four of us.”
The two are looking forward to welcoming their daughter into their family with “our two dogs.”
Will there be more baby Sussexes? Unlikely — the couple also said they’d like to stick to just two kids. “Two is it,” they said.
Meghan shared that she and Harry were married in private three days before their public 2018 wedding.
“No one knows that, but we called the Archbishop and we just said ‘Look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us,’” she said. “The vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”
While Meghan was pregnant with Archie, the royal family decided that he would not be given a Royal title and that he wouldn’t receive personal security.
This played a huge part in her decision not to take a traditional photo outside the hospital where he was born.
“There was a fear surrounding it, because we were scared of having to offer up our baby, knowing that they weren’t going to be kept safe,” Meghan said.
Before Archie was born, some members of the royal family had conversations with Harry about their unborn child’s skin color and what it could mean for the family.
“That was relayed to me from Harry,” Megan said. “Those were conversations that family had with him. And I think it was really hard to be able to see those as compartmentalized conversations.”
However, she didn’t reveal who had the conversation with Harry, saying it would be “very damaging to them.”
The pressures of being part of the royal family weighed so heavily on Meghan that it took a toll on her mental health. This was exacerbated by the harassment from the British press.
“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” Meghan said, confirming that she had suicidal thoughts. “I thought [suicide] would have solved everything for everyone.”
Meghan also said that she sought help from the royal institution, but this request was denied.

Even though the world may think that the life of a royal would be like living in a dream, Harry says that it was so restrictive that he felt “trapped”.
“I was trapped but didn’t know I was trapped,” Harry said. “Trapped within the system. My father and my brother, they are trapped.”
Harry shares that in spite of the privileges of being born into the royal family, he felt that he had no choice in his life and no way out of the institution — until he met Meghan.
The Sussexes also went into the state of their relationships with the royal family.
Harry on Prince Charles:
Harry said that his father Prince Charles stopped taking his calls before they went public about their royal family exit. Why? “Because I took matters into my own hands,” says Harry.
The two have recently started speaking again, but Harry admits “there’s a lot to work through.”
“I felt really let down, because he’s been through something similar. He knows what pain feels like… and Archie’s his grandson. But, at the same time, you know… of course I will always love him, but there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened. And I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.”
Harry on Prince William:
“I love William to bits. He’s my brother. We’ve been through hell together. I mean, we have a shared experience. But… we’re on different paths,” Harry said.
However, he did say that their relationship still needs some healing. “The relationship [with William] is space at the moment. Time heals all things.”
Harry and Meghan on Queen Elizabeth:
Harry said that he and his grandmother have a good relationship. “I’ve spoken more to my grandmother in the last year than I have done for many, many years,” he said. “My grandmother and I have a really good relationship… And an understanding. And I have a deep respect for her. She’s my colonel in chief, right? She always will be.”
Similarly, Meghan could only say positive things about the Queen: “The Queen has always been wonderful to me. I just really loved being in her company,” Markle explained. The Queen even gave her “some beautiful pearl earrings and a necklace” on their first public outing.
Harry also said that he never “blindsided” the Queen about their exit. “When we were in Canada I had several conversations with my grandmother.”
Meghan on the rumored rift between herself and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge:
Contrary to what the British tabloids reported, Meghan never made Kate cry. “The reverse happened,” Meghan said.
Apparently, Kate was upset about the flower girl dresses at Meghan’s wedding. “A few days before the wedding she was upset about flower girl dresses and it made me cry.”
Thankfully, Kate was apologetic about it and Meghan doesn’t hold any grudges against her sister-in-law. “…It was a really hard week of the wedding,” Meghan said. “She owned it and she apologized and she brought me flowers.”
The couple have been criticized by the British press for their many media appearances, saying it was hypocritical of them to exit the royal family only to pursue the celebrity life. According to Harry, the reason why they’re signing these deals is that they need the money.
“What I needed was enough money to keep my family safe,” Harry said.
“Spotify & Netflix were never part of the plan. But my family cut us off in the first quarter of 2020. I relied on my inheritance from my mother until we got those deals.”
Harry: “Yeah, my family cut me off. And if it wasn’t for the money that my mum left me, Meghan and I wouldn’t have been able to do this and be on our own.”

Harry also said that Diana might have anticipated this.
“Touching back on what my mum would think of this, I think she saw it coming,” Harry said. “I can’t imagine what it was like for her going through this by herself, at least we have each other.”
