After a successful season premiere, Netflix announced that the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA) will have two more seasons of Aang’s journey with the rest of the #Gaang. We know nothing about the upcoming seasons yet, but it won’t hurt to make a little wishlist, right? Here are 8 episodes from the original ATLA series that we’re eager to see brought to life.
If you haven’t watched ATLA animated series, a spoiler alert is now in full effect!
Aang and his adorable flying bison Appa share an incredible bond, which is crystal clear throughout ATLA’s three books. Seeing Appa get captured helplessly by the sandbenders was heartbreaking, and it was even worse watching him endure all that abuse in the Fire Nation circus. Rumor has it fans were screaming and punching the air after watching it.
Mastering all four elements is a Herculean task for any Avatar, let alone finding the right master to teach all the skills they need to learn. Everyone’s curious to know who will teach Aang earthbending and boy, we weren’t disappointed. Toph Beifong was a breath of fresh air from the usual female characters we see.
Despite being blind and getting coddled by the people around her, Toph never wavered from pursuing greatness. She also saved the team a lot! We’re crossing our fingers that Netflix gets Toph’s live-action adaptation right, or we’re going out on the streets.
This episode showed us why Azula is one of the strongest characters on ATLA. Watching the Fire Nation Princess chase Team Avatar with her blue flames alongside her friends proves she’s not one to mess with. At one point in the episode, Azula has no problems fighting her brother Zuko and Avatar Aang. Despite being cornered, she manages to flee unscathed and even injures her Uncle Iroh.
After his father banished him from the Fire Nation, Zuko’s life revolved around one mission—to capture the Avatar and bring back his honor. Watching this episode from Zuko’s point of view gave fans a profound understanding of who he really is. Beneath the anguish and loneliness lies a brave heart willing to protect people in need.
The repercussions of a war lasting a hundred years can be overwhelming for innocent people to bear, like the Jang Hui villagers. After seeing them suffer from food shortage and water pollution, Katara takes the matter into her own hands to take down a nearby factory causing all the trouble. She dressed up as the Painted Lady, a spirit known for watching over the Jang Hui River. Although everything worked out in the end, it’s a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for peace and justice.
Episode 12 is where we finally see Zuko regret everything he did to the Avatar squad and embrace his role in ending the war, eventually becoming Aang’s firebending teacher. If Netflix follows Zuko’s redemption arc like in the OG ATLA, they won’t have trouble with the fans. It’s what made him such a compelling and lovable character!
We all know waterbending is deadly, so seeing its other lethal form, bloodbending, changes our Avatarverse. Hama is both a skilled waterbender and a bloodbender determined to teach Katara her skills. Katara initially refuses, and the two duel it out. Following Hama’s arrest by the villagers for her heinous acts, it was a hauntingly beautiful moment to see her congratulate Katara for eventually learning bloodbending.
Ask any fan about their favorite episode of ATLA, and chances are they’ll mention “The Crossroads of Destiny”. From Zuko’s halted redemption to Aang’s near demise, it marked a pivotal moment in ATLA’s evolution from a mere ‘children’s show’ to a more mature narrative. And who could forget the breathtaking fight scenes? Just imagine watching Aang and Katara facing off against Azula and Zuko in the live-action series. That would be epic!
