Despite achieving a historic win for the Philippines, gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo‘s back-to-back Olympic gold medals in Paris 2024 were tainted by the allegations and interviews of his mother, Angelica Yulo. Days after the issue blew up with interviews of Angelica going viral on the internet, the double-gold Olympic medalist has released a statement on TikTok, and here’s what Carlos Yulo has to say about the issue:

Where the money went

Angelica recently found herself in the center of a social media storm after a controversial interview with Bombo Radyo Philippines. Instead of celebrating her son Carlos’ historic Olympic gold medal win, she dominated the conversation with personal revelations that quickly went viral.

In the interview, Angelica disclosed that she had managed the cash incentive Carlos received after his 2022 World Championship victory. She claimed to have kept only Php 70,000, which she deposited into her own BPI account, citing concerns about her son’s future financial security.

In his TikTok video, Carlos clarified that the World Championship incentive Angelica was talking about was actually more than Php 70,000 and in the “six digits.”

Carlos said that his mother didn’t tell him that she already received the cash incentives. He wouldn’t even know about it if he didn’t ask.

“Never ko na po nareceive yung incentives ko na yon at never ko na rin naman po na hinigi yon sa kanila… Ang sakin lang naman, gusto ko malaman kung san napunta yung incentives ko po na yon,” he said.

“Yung principle po kasi dito wala po sa liit or laki ng amount ng incentives na ginalaw niya kundi sa pag-tago at pag-galaw niya ng wala ko pong consent. Yun yung pinopoint ko po sa kanya,” said the 24-year-old athlete.

His girlfriend, Chloe San Jose

Addressing his mother’s comments about Chloe San Jose, his girlfriend of four years, and how she presents herself, Carlos said that Chloe grew up in a different environment and culture.

“Unang una lumaki si Chloe sa Australia at yun ang nakagisnan niyang culture at ibang iba po talaga sa Pilipinas, kung papaano tayo gumalaw, magsalita at manamit,” he said in defense.

Addressing Angelica’s insinuations about Chloe’s intentions

In response to his mother’s comment insinuating Chloe is a gold digger, he clarified that Chloe has her own income, so she’s able to pay for her needs, including traveling with Carlos all over the world.

“Si Chloe po may sarili po siyang income and lahat po ng bank account ko nasa mama ko po. May mga instances po talaga na si Chloe po yung sumasagot sakin dati,” said Carlos.

He said that Angelica previously had access to his bank accounts, from which he gets his monthly gymnastics allowance. When he took over the accounts, he found out his mom used the money and the proof is in the withdrawals in his bank statements.

On Chloe staying at his dorm in Japan

Carlos also addressed his mom’s concerns about Chloe staying at Carlos’ dorm in Japan, which was funded by the Philippine Sports Commission.

He clarified that his contract didn’t indicate that guests and outsiders aren’t allowed to stay in his dorm while he’s training. Furthermore, he said that Chloe was actually invited by his former coach in Japan.

In the viral interview, Angelica was dismayed that Chloe was staying at the dorm, especially when Carlos’ younger brother, Eldrew, and another young athlete were invited to train in Japan and stay in the same dorm.

For Carlos, the whole thing was a misunderstanding. “Miscommunicated yun na dun pala sila sakin na mag-i-istay,” he said.

But even though they were surprised, Chloe and Carlos made sure they welcomed the young gymnasts: “Bilang nakakatandang kapatid, bilang boyfriend ni Chloe, at bilang ate’t kuya, aalagaan po namin sila. Hindi po naming gagawin yung mga iniisip niya na ganon,”

Addressing Angelica’s comments about Chloe

In her interview, Angelica raised concerns about Chloe staying at the dorm with the athletes. “Baka mapatingin sa pwet dahil nakakalat, maging masama yung bata,” she said.

Responding to the comment, Carlos said: “Ang dumi niya magisip at hindi appropriate yun para sakin at disrespectful yun sakin at kay Chloe.”

On Chloe driving a wedge between Carlos and Angelica

“Feeling ko inilalayo niya (Chloe) sa amin si Caloy,” said Angelica in her interview.

Carlos cleared his mother’s allegations by saying the couple tried to spend time with the Yulos when they went on a family trip to Baguio. But the screenshots that Chloe added to the video showed she was puzzled when Carlos’ mom suddenly blocked her on social media.

“Tatampo yon, kasi last na uwi ni Caloy di nila naka-bonding ng maayos, alam mo naman,” wrote Carlos’ older sister, Jorielgel, in a message to Chloe.

Carlos revealed that his and Chloe’s families had already met twice. However, when Carlos’ family started avoiding the San Joses and throwing shade on social media, the San Joses even made a group chat to address the Yulos’ concerns.

Carlos has forgiven his mother

Despite his mother’s unkind statements, the athlete acknowledged his mother’s congratulatory message, especially if it was sincere.

However, he added that he remains hurt and wounded over her harsh words. “Nag-fa-flashback pa rin po talaga yung mga masasakit niyong sinabi sa akin at yung mga hindi niyo pag-wish well as akin. Tumatak po yan talaga sa akin.”

Carlos still hopes for the best for his mother: “Ang message ko po sa inyo, Ma: Magheal kayo. Mag-move on. Napatawad ko na kayo a long time ago. Pinag-pe-pray ko na maging safe kayo.”

He urges his mother to stop feeding the fire of this issue and instead focus on the Filipino athletes competing in Paris 2024. “Tigilan na po natin to. I-celebrate na lang po natin yung ginawang paghihirap at sakripisyo ng bawat atletang Pilipino dito sa Olympics.”
