Chelsea Manalo Was Named Miss Universe Asia 2024, But What Exactly Is This Title?

Victoria Kjaer Theilvig of Denmark was just crowned Miss Universe 2024, making her the first from Denmark and the first Miss U to wear a Filipino-crafted crown (“The Light of Infinity” by local brand Jewelmer). And while our own Chelsea Manalo bowed out early in the competition, finishing at the Top 30, she was named Miss Universe Asia.
What is that title, you ask? Let’s get into it.
The first-ever Miss Universe Asia
In a post-pageant press conference held in Mexico City, Chelsea Manalo was named the first-ever Miss Universe Asia.

In an Instagram video posted on the Miss Universe Philippines 2024 account, the Bulacan-born beauty queen shared the recognition with her fellow Filipinos: “Mabuhay ang Pilipinas! We are making history as Miss Universe Asia.”
But what exactly is this new title?
What is Miss Universe Asia?
The Miss Universe Asia is one of four “continental queens”, which are new titles for this year’s edition of Miss Universe.
The other three continental titles went to the following beauty queens:
- Chidimma Adetshina of Nigeria – Miss Universe Africa & Oceania
- Matilda Wirtavuori of Finland – Miss Universe Europe & Middle East
- Tatiana Calmell of Peru – Miss Universe Americas

Previous editions of the pageant often resulted in unequal representation across regions. Through the continental queen system, the Miss Universe organization chooses four representatives, so each region is guaranteed representation. The continental queens automatically get spots in the semifinals, along with one fan-voted contestant and 25 judge-chosen contestants.
Just like the reigning Miss Universe, the continental queens will serve as ambassadors for their respective continents. Continental titleholders will also be joining some of the official trips of the Miss Universe Organization. They will also be traveling around their respective continents, so in Chelsea’s case, she will be visiting countries around Asia.
