Manila Cathedral Will Grant Public Access to Off-Limits Spaces This June 12

Jun 11, 2026   •   Edgardo Toledo

Most days, the Manila Cathedral lives in a very specific, highly curated space of our collective consciousness—a place where faith and solemnity co-exist. But this Independence Day, the Cathedral is inviting the public into the spaces usually hidden behind velvet ropes. After all, what better way to celebrate freedom than by exploring the very spaces that belong to our story?

If you’ve ever sat during a Sunday homily or found your eyes wandering toward the ceiling or the Cathedral’s shadowy corners, this year’s open house lets you enjoy a rare all-access pass to the cathedral crypt, choir loft, and roof deck. The best part? It’s FREE!

The Crypt

This is the final resting place of Manila’s past Archbishops—including figures who heavily shaped modern Philippine history, like Jaime Cardinal Sin, Michael J. O’Doherty, Gabriel M. Reyes, and Rufino J. Cardinal Santos.

The Choir Loft

The choir loft offers a breathtaking perspective of the entire nave. But the real star here is the cathedral’s legendary pipe organ, which boasts over 5,000 pipes and is considered the largest church pipe organ in the country.

The Roof Deck

The Cathedral’s roof deck is probably the crown jewel of the tour, giving you a sweeping, bird’s-eye view of the terracotta-and-concrete skyline of Intramuros.

To maximize your visit, plan your schedule around these key events:

📝 Independence Day Mass | 7:30 AM and 12:10 PM

📝 Pipe Organ Concerts | 9:30 AM and 1:30 PM

📝 Free Guided Tours | 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM

If you still have time, the Manila Cathedral partnered with the Gallery of Prints for Manila in Print—an immersive, historical exhibition of antique prints, maps, and rare visual materials depicting the Manila Cathedral, Intramuros, and the city’s rich history. And yes, it’s FREE as well.

📍 St. Joseph Chapel of the Manila Cathedral

🕖 Open daily from June 12 to 14, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM

For the love of your aching backs and feet (eherm, trentahins), leave the heavy bags at home, wear your comfiest shoes, and bring a portable fan and your trusty water tumbler. Once you’re done, cap off your holiday with a slow, aimless stroll through the nearby plazas like the main character that you are.

Why do “third spaces” and open heritage matter?

Photo from Melvin Glinoga/Unsplash

Metro Manila is a dense metropolis, and we’re constantly starving for open, walkable “third spaces.” Pinoys want places outside of their homes and offices where they can just exist and breathe without a commercial receipt in hand. Transforming historic landmarks like the Manila Cathedral into an open sandbox for a day bridges the gap between a sacred institution and a vibrant civic space.

As cliché as it may sound, the Cathedral also serves as a reminder of Filipino resilience. It was built through collective effort and stands today as a living monument to survival, architectural grandeur, and local pride.

Manila Cathedral hasn’t posted any registration forms for the Open House, so it looks like walk-ins are welcome. To know more, visit Manila Cathedral’s Facebook page for the latest announcements.
