Late last year Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) released the new 5-peso coin design, a part of the New Generation Currency Coin Series.  It now features Gat Andres Bonifacio on one side and on the other, the Tayabak or Philippine Jade Vine. These new 5-peso coins have been in circulation since December 2017 and the rest of the coin series will be released for circulation this January.

While new coins are great and all, this one has features that earned a lot of negative criticism online.

The new 5-peso coin went from pale gold colored to silver colored and from 27mm to 25mm. Our current 1-peso coin is also silver colored with a 24mm diameter. With just a millimeter difference, it’s easy to interchange the two as these netizens soon found out…

It’s so confusing even Sen. Nancy Binay asked BSP to temporarily stop production, or, you know, think of another better design?
