Three months after Adrian Rovic Fornillos‘ untimely demise, Cagayan de Oro City Police Office are still looking for his murderer. But recent viral posts on social media seem to be shedding more light on the story. Many alleged that it was a crime of passion, a love triangle gone wrong between Fornillos, his girlfriend, Jone Leonel Orog, and her alleged sugar daddy. Here’s what people are saying so far.
The 23-year-old Fornillos died on the evening of May 9, 2023 when an unidentified gunman shot him in the head at close range. He was rushed to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center but was pronounced dead the following day due to severe brain injury.
Fornillos was a candidate for the Mr. Cagayan De Oro 2023 pageant and, on the night he was attacked, was on his way to his trainer’s house to practice for the event. Authorities’ initial probe led them to believe the motive might be pageant-related. Back in May, they’ve even identified three persons of interest. However, recent news circulating online has many speculating if there are still so much more left to investigate.
According to Bombo Radyo CDO, the police have identified the criminal mastermind to Fornillos’ murder as a powerful person in the region. But while they haven’t dropped names, social media seems convinced that Pastor Dimver Andales of the Lapasan Baptist Church might be involved in the case.
Screenshots of allegedly retrieved conversations from Fornillos’ phone are circulating on Facebook. In them, his girlfriend, Orog, seems to be talking about having a “sugar daddy” who’s allegedly Pastor Andales. The messages also alleged that Andales sent Orog a bouquet of flowers and gifted her a bag worth Php 24k. Eventually, Andales allegedly got jealous of Orog and Fornillos’ relationship which allegedly pushed him to plan the latter’s murder.
However, it is unclear who first leaked the screenshots, thereby raising suspicions on their legitimacy.
After online clamor from Pinoys on social media, Andales finally addressed the rumors. In an interview with iFM CDO, he denied that he is Orog’s sugar daddy and stressed that he’s happy and content with his wife. Andales also said that he believes the accusations are politically motivated since he recently failed to get elected as a member of the 2022 Sangguniang Panlungsod of Cagayan de Oro’s second district.
The pastor added that he and his legal team will be pressing charges against those spreading rumors and tarnishing his name on social media.
As quick as some were to believe that Fornillos’ murder was a crime of passion and that Pastor Andales was the mastermind, many were also quick to give him the benefit of the doubt. Facebook user Aaron Navarro pointed out that Andales had a solid alibi: A preaching engagement in Bukidnon on May 9, the day of the murder. Fornillos’ father also allegedly asked Andales to speak during his son’s wake.
Navarro also pointed out other impossibilities in the stories circulating online. First, it’s impossible for Pastor Andales to give Orog Php 1 million every month, just like what the screenshots alleged, since pastors don’t earn that much. Next, the Php 24k bag that was allegedly gifted Orog should also be easily traced back to the pastor if he bought it but there is no evidence of it.
Navarro added that Orog’s story about the pastor visiting her during an event at the mall and giving her a bouquet of flowers could easily be disproven too. “There are CCTVs that could potentially validate this claim, and the store’s employees could serve as witnesses, but NONE of that evidence exists,” said Navarro.
“If the pastor is guilty, then let him be jailed, I am for justice and truth! BUT WHAT IF, the mastermind is just around the corner, MOCKING and LAUGHING at us in accusing the wrong person, let the pastor still be jailed???” he ended his post.
When Liceo de Cagayan University held its college graduation rites last July 25, both Fornillos and Orog got to graduate. He, represented by his mom holding a large picture frame of his graduation photo, and her celebrating with a life-sized standee of her late boyfriend.
“And finally, graduate nata mahal!! The Adriane I knew back in 2019 is nothing compared to who you are now, and I will always be proud of what you have become. Then you died, and a huge part of me died with you. No one was prepared for your passing, mahal, but I believe God knew you were already the best version of yourself and that you’re ready to return to your rightful home, where you will find unconditional love and happiness,” wrote Orog in a sweet tribute that garnered 97k reactions on Facebook.
Orog has yet to address the accusations that she had something to do with her late boyfriend’s murder.
In the three months that passed, Fornillos is yet to get the justice he deserves. His family have been posting tribute messages and calls for justice on their respective Facebook pages.
