As of writing, Netflix Original The Queen’s Gambit ranks 7th on Netflix Philippine’s Top 10 list – the show has almost never left the list since it was released on Oct. 23. The streaming giant even shared that over 62 million households watched the miniseries on its first 28 days making it Netflix’s biggest scripted limited series to date.
The Queen’s Gambit is a period drama that follows the life of Beth Harmon, a chess prodigy who struggles with addiction. Anya Taylor-Joy‘s captivating acting and charisma as Beth transcend the screen and we honestly can’t have enough of her. Unfortunately, miniseries are bound to end but if you want to see more of Taylor-Joy, here are other series and films she stars in.
Robert Eggers’ directorial debut starred Taylor-Joy who had such a remarkable performance that it won her various awards. The 2015 horror film is about a family of settlers encountering forces of witchcraft, black magic, and possession in the woods. Taylor-Joy won Breakthrough Actor Award at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, New Mexico Film Critics’ Best Young Actress award, Fright Meter Awards’ Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Phoenix Film Critics Society’s Breakthrough Performance award.
If you’re wondering why Taylor-Joy looks familiar, it might be because you’ve seen her in M. Night Shyamalan’s hit 2016 psychological-thriller film Split. Here she plays Casey Cooke, a teenaged girl abducted by a man with multiple personalities (James McAvoy). BloodGuts UK Horror Awards recognized her performance and awarded her as Best Supporting Actress in 2018.
Taylor-Joy reprised her role as Casey Cooke in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2019 film, Glass. The psychological-thriller film is the third installment in Shyamalan’s Unbreakable trilogy which includes Unbreakable in 200 starring Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson, and Split in 2016 starring James McAvoy. Taylor-Joy’s character gets dragged back into the nightmare after having survived being kidnapped in the previous film.
At this point, we know Taylor-Joy at least has an affinity for starring in thrillers. In the 2017 horror-mystery Marrowbone, she plays Allie, the new friend of the four titular Marrowbone siblings. The siblings have relocated from England to a manor in Maine, concealing the death of their mother so they could remain together, but soon discover that a sinister presence plagues their home.
Peaky Blinders certainly is a top-tier period crime TV series that the internet has been buzzing about since its premiere. Everyone fears the sophisticated Shelby family of gangsters headed by Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory). Gina Gray, Taylor-Joy’s character, is introduced in Season 5 as Michael Gray’s (Finn Cole) wife. Here, Taylor-Joy is elegant (as usual), cunning, and uses her charm to goad her husband into challenging the family hierarchy.
BBC One’s period piece stars Taylor-Joy as Petronella Brandt, a woman whose merchant husband gifted her a miniature house. Things begin to get eerie when the lifelike miniatures start foreshadowing her fate.
She stuns in yet another period piece – a refreshing adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Emma. Beautiful, rich, and spoiled socialite Emma occupies herself with matchmaking and meddling with the lives of her friends. The film’s refreshing take highlights Taylor-Joy’s charm and her beauty in all those extravagant costumes.
The 2020 American superhero horror film stars Taylor-Joy alongside Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga. The group of young mutants are held in a secret facility against their will and must fight to escape the strange occurrences and save themselves. Although the film itself received mixed reviews, it’s a treat to see Taylor-Joy as a superhero in an action movie!
