8 Iconic Details in the ‘Barbie’ Trailer That Promises It Will Be the Best Movie of 2023

Apr 12, 2023   •   Meryl Medel

When the latest trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming live-action Barbie, everybody went crazy with excitement. It was only a little less than two minutes, but on top of the trendsetting character posters, there were a lot of things to unpack. We know it can be overwhelming, so we’ve done the job for you and compiled the small yet important details fans have dissected from the teaser trailers and character posters of Barbie The Movie.

Barbie’s feet in the classic tiptoes

At the start of the second teaser trailer, we see Barbie walking with her heels on. And as she removed her shoes, everyone all around the world simultaneously gasped when her feet remained arched like the classic doll’s stiletto tiptoe.

“Her taking her foot out of the heel only for it to still be in the Barbie foot shape…THAT IS CINEMA,” Twitter user luxxnoirlondon wrote. Even model Chrissy Teigen found this particular detail fascinating, asking for a documentary centered on that tiptoe scene.

Barbie’s shoes

One Twitter user thought that not getting a designer brand for Barbie’s heel was a missed opportunity for the movie’s marketing team. But Twitter user ungodlywests quickly shut that down: no Louboutins, only jelly heels. They’re not wrong. The original Barbie dolls wore no designer brands — just a pair of chic jelly heels.

barbie wasn’t wearin no fuckin louboutins them shits were made of jelly https://t.co/HxnlbkDeUt

Meanwhile, in contrast to the Barbie dolls, with different chic high heels that match their OOTDs, all the Kens have the same white shoes. Just the perfect emphasis to Ken’s role in Barbie’s story!

Barbie’s iconic outfits

At first glance, you can already see that each Barbie wears a stylish outfit. But when you look closer, you’ll notice that these chic clothes are faithful copies of the clothes worn by the OG Barbie dolls.

From the first ever Barbie’s black-and-white striped tube romper to the Golden Dream Barbie ensemble, they’re all so on point! Even mermaid Barbie, played by Dua Lipa, has such faithful costume design!

Every Barbieland doll ever

Speaking of dolls, aside from the most well-known Barbie and Ken dolls, the movie also brings to life some long-forgotten dolls that were discontinued for a variety of reasons.

A perfect example is Michael Cera’s character Allan, marketed as Ken’s friend who can fit in all his clothes.

Another is a Barbie with a prosthetic arm, who you can find in the trailer as a staff member of President Barbie’s team. In 2019, Mattel debuted Barbie dolls with prosthetics and wheelchairs, and fans assume this particular Barbie is a nod to those 2019 dolls. Of course, this Barbie is still a fashionista at heart, so even her accessories are matched with her prosthetic arm — look at that bangle and that belt!

Finally, there’s also Midge, the pregnant Barbie doll, which was discontinued for being allegedly too mature for its target audience. Midge wasn’t in the trailer yet, but we did see her character poster.

The toyification of all things

In Barbie’s world, aptly named Barbieland, everyone and everything is bright, happy, optimistic — and of course, a toy. In the trailer, we can confirm every Barbie doll and every Ken doll — and yes, even the one and only Allan doll — are toys. So of course, everything else from the hairbrush and the mirror to the car and the iconic rollerblades are toyified. In the rollerblades’ case, jellyfied. The pool is made of cardboard water, and even the sea is very much made of plastic, complete with fake waves that don’t ever fall.

Possible cameos

A few fans are also speculating that the Barbies from the animated movies could make a cameo appearance with a couple of references to the movies. In a shot featuring Ken, there’s a building painted with a fairy that looks a lot like the Fairy Barbie in the Barbie in a Fairy Secret movie, down to her clothes and wings, as pointed out by Tiktok user theafternoonspecial.

While more of a reach, another possible reference to Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus and Barbie: Mermaidia are the statues of pegasi and mermaids by the beach (though they could really just be statues of no particular importance).

The homage to The Wizard of Oz

When Barbie drives by the Barbieland theater, the movie now showing there is The Wizard of Oz, with posters of Judy Garland’s Dorothy, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion all around.

Tiktok user catquinn believes this is a clue to the movie’s plot, which until now we know very little of. Like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Barbie may be transported into another world (in this case, the real world filled with humans). A few other clues supporting this theory are the pink brick road that leads to the real world (equivalent to Dorothy’s yellow brick road) and the gingham dresses Barbie wears in both teasers (similar to Dorothy’s own gingham dress).

More pop culture references

From the teasers to the character posters, there have been a lot of references to not only deep Barbie lore, but also a whole lot of pop culture icons, as enumerated by Tiktok user theafternoonspecial.

References to Warner Bros. Pictures are also peppered in the trailer, including on a water tower and a building behind Will Ferrell. Screenshots from the trailer of Barbie/Warner Bros. Pictures

The movie isn’t even out yet, but everything is already an absolute chef’s kiss! We can’t wait for Barbie to hit theaters on July 21, 2023. Please come sooner!
