#NgipinNgBatas: Chel Diokno Gets Virtual Love After Being Mocked for His Teeth

Apr 6, 2020   •   Kyzia Maramara

When President Rodrigo Duterte addressed the public late night of April 3, his speech included a bizarre lashing out at human rights lawyer Chel Diokno. The President accused Diokno of “giving encouragement for people to violate the law.” This was because the latter took on the case of an individual summoned by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for spreading misinformation on social media regarding the COVID-19 crisis.

The President further ridiculed Diokno, calling him a “lousy lawyer,” an “intellectual liar,” and poking fun at his teeth. Naturally, this sparked an online outrage with Diokno himself acknowledging the President’s comments.

— Chel Diokno (@ChelDiokno) April 4, 2020

Diokno was compared to a janitor

Before insulting his protruding teeth, the President hurled his first shocking statement during the address: “Itong si Diokno, kung magsalita parang janitor…”

Everyone knows that apart from the health workers, policemen, and soldiers, the caretakers, cleaning crew, and garbage collectors are also frontliners in this battle. They are also risking their lives cleaning facilities and cities and at the same time are struggling to provide for their own families.

For Duterte to say Chel Diokno talks like a janitor isn’t just an insult to Chel. It’s also an insult to all janitors out there who are working at this very moment just to keep our hospitals and other necessary establishments clean. #OUSTDUTERTENOW

— Megan #FreeMassTestingNow (@MsSilverlake) April 3, 2020

The audacity of Duterte to degrade janitors just to bring down Atty Chel Diokno.

This is Carl Tibang, a janitor, one of our brave frontliners who are risking their lives out there despite their meager salary just to save people.

SHAME ON YOU DUTERTE!!! https://t.co/Emw4SdlvC8

— (@krizzy_kalerqui) April 3, 2020

But maybe Chel Diokno can turn things around?

Y’know it doesn’t take a genius to realize Chel can use the janitor label in a positive way.

Ad hominem pa more

“Ang Lake ng Ngipin mo Chel Diokno” No wonder DDS uses Ad Hominem all the time because their tatay does the same way.

For those who aren’t familiar with the term, ad hominem means responding to a person’s argument by making personal attacks rather than focusing on the argument itself. Sounds familiar? Yeah, we’ve seen a lot of examples of that televised over the years.

Right-hand men scrambling for an excuse

Panelo’s thought murmurs right now: “Kayo naman, when the president said malaki ang ngipin ni Chel Diokno, it was a metaphor na may ngipin ang batas. You yellows always take his statements literally and out of context. The President is Bisaya.”

— Quarantintin Bersola #FeedTheHungryArrestBelmonte (@claudiopoy) April 3, 2020

It’s getting predictable. The President will say something outrageous on-air and the next few days one of his subjects will give an interview telling the masses “don’t take it literally.” Kinda like what happened here.

Are we really still insulting people’s appearance?

Totoo yan, Bullet. Pero no to ngipin shaming pa rin!

— Chel Diokno (@ChelDiokno) April 4, 2020

As the Twitterverse President of the Philippines would say, “C’mon guys, it’s [2020!].” Everyone should know by now that a person should never be judged based on how they look. No to ngipin shaming!

You could have protruding teeth but be the most dependable person anyone will come across or you could also have the most handsome, jaw-dropping features and turn out to be a monster. (Clue: This is why some girls say ‘Panget is the new pogi‘.)

The go-to argument

Just because we criticize doesn’t mean na gusto na namin magpresidente.

— The Fake Marian (@superstarmarian) April 5, 2020

The “Anong ambag mo?” argument is getting really old.

The insults actually only made Chel Diokno more well-loved

— Miss Go (@miriamgracego) April 4, 2020

The insult isn’t new. During the campaign for the 2019 senatorial elections around the same time last year, the President took a jab at the opposition and said that Diokno’s name confuses him since it sounds like it could be a woman’s name. This was followed by a remark on Diokno’s teeth to which the latter replied, “Di bale nang mawala ang ngipin ko, wag lang mawalan ng ngipin ang batas!”

Since Diokno’s teeth were made fun of after last Friday’s address, thousands of netizens backed him up on Twitter and a dental clinic in Makati even voiced out their support. Needless to say, the spotlight that was put on him only made people aware of what he’s doing to help the country.

Teeth conditions are never a laughing matter. All smiles are beautiful, but at Winning Smile we make it better.

Atty. @cheldiokno, we’ve got you covered.#WokeLolo #NgipinNgBatas #WokeDentist #WinningSmilePH #WinningSmileDentalClinicMakati #MakatiDentist #SmileDesign pic.twitter.com/38dqOa2a9T

Chel’s defense

— Chel Diokno (@ChelDiokno) April 4, 2020

This country deserves more officials with their hearts in the right place. Chel Diokno is helping in any way he can during this crisis and the underlying political battle it’s bringing with it. He even gave advice on what to do if one receives a subpoena from the NBI. He’s standing his ground and we appreciate him for it.

Focus, please

I really don’t get it. Why are you using your platform just to insult Chel Diokno instead of providing concrete actions ah.

— James Gung Yoo (@itsmejamesguyo) April 3, 2020

At the end of the day, we’ve got worse problems than politics. The enemy is a pandemic that many Filipinos have already died too and it should be in everyone’s best interest to work hand-in-hand to defeat it. Government officials should be expected to work harder to assure the people, provide aid, and give hope during these trying times. We just wish they focus more on creating a solid plan for defeating COVID-19 and not on tearing the opposition apart!

What do you think of the remarks against Chel Diokno?
