These Relatable Coming-of-Age Titles for 20-Somethings Will Make You Feel Seen

Sep 13, 2023   •   8List Editor

Your 20s: it’s a rollercoaster ride; a time of endless possibilities, newfound independence, and the thrill of chasing dreams. But it can also be downright confusing. From navigating career choices to deciphering love and relationships, this transformative decade is a whirlwind of emotions and experiences.

If you’re still in the thick of it, we’ve got good news: you’re not alone. Lionsgate Play is full of coming-of-age stories exploring the unique struggles of 20-somethings. From a young couple grappling with the dynamics of their changing relationship to a woman waiting for her life to begin, these stories will make you feel seen.

Starstruck

A refreshing and hilarious romantic comedy series set in London, Starstruck follows a millennial woman navigating two dead-end jobs and the aftermath of a one-night stand, only to discover that her fling is actually a famous film star. Created and co-written by its star, Kiwi comedian Rose Matafeo, the show oozes comedic genius, witty dialogue, and relatable portrayals of the struggles and triumphs of young adulthood.

Normal People

Based on the novel by Sally Rooney, the miniseries Normal People lets viewers take an intimate look into the lives of Marianne (Daisy Edgar Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal). After leaving their small hometown in Ireland, their paths intertwine as they navigate the complexities of love, friendship, and personal growth. A poignant coming-of-age tale, Normal People will resonate with anyone struggling to navigate the changing dynamics of adult relationships.

Ramy

Starring comedian Ramy Youssef, the comedy-drama series Ramy is about the son of Egyptian immigrants as he navigates the complexities of his New Jersey neighborhood. The show draws inspiration from Youssef’s own life, following Ramy as he grapples with conflicting spiritual beliefs, the expectations of his Muslim community, the happy-go-lucky lifestyles of his millennial friends, and an ever-watchful God. From awkward dates to the mounting pressure from family and friends to settle down, Ramy blends comedy and introspection, providing a humorous yet profound exploration of identity, familial bonds, and the quest for meaning.

Everything I Know About Love

Inspired by Dolly Alderton’s memoir of the same name, Everything I Know About Love is a delightful seven-part British comedy-drama series. It follows the misadventures of childhood best friends Maggie (Emma Appleton) and Birdy (Bel Powley) as they contend with bad dates, heartaches, and other humiliations. With a lighthearted tone, the series is all about celebrating the journey of love and friendship, making it a delightful watch that’ll make you feel a little better about your own trials and tribulations.

Sweetbitter

When 22-year-old Tess (Ella Purnell) arrives in New York, she has no friends or specific ambitions. But she manages to land herself in a training opportunity at one of the city’s top restaurants. Initially viewing it as a temporary gig, she quickly becomes enamored with the world behind the scenes, with its expensive wines, dive bars, and complex relationships. Inspired by Stephanie Danler’s novel and her own experiences at the renowned Union Square Café, Sweetbitter is a compelling exploration of self-discovery, camaraderie, and the vibrant restaurant industry of New York City.
