Last Monday, about 20 Filipino transgenders clashed with four of their Thai counterparts in a fight that broke out at a restaurant in Bangkok. Videos of the fight went viral online, and netizens couldn’t help but give their two cents on social media. Here’s what happened:

According to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, two transgender Filipinos have been charged with assault and battery after being detained.

The initial argument started between two Filipinos and three Thais along Sukhumvit Road. It escalated until both groups grew in number, and its members ended up in a physical altercation.

Authorities were called to the scene, and the Lumpini Police Station sent in officers to break up the fight and escort the injured. According to de Vega, the Thai police are currently investigating the incident, with a hearing scheduled for March 8.

The brawl dilemma

A netizen in a now-viral post on X reacted to the brawl. The video showed the chaos and even caught some people shouting “Get out” at the Filipino transwomen. Other Thais also allegedly called them “nasty” and “unpleasant.”

“Words quickly spread as the Filipino group uploaded content of themselves mocking and assaulting a Thai trans woman. This sparked outrage on Thai social media. By 3:30 am the next day, a mob of 100 mostly Thai trans women were at the Filipino group’s hotel, and they were pissed,” the X user said.

Pinoys sympathize with the victims

Despite everything that happened, Pinoys can’t help but side with the Thai transwomen. Filmmaker and Drag Den Philippines series creator Rod Singh said what happened to the Thai transwomen was unfortunate.

“Thai people are standing up for Thai trans women, and they are very protective of them. While I wish they acted with restraint and let the authorities handle it, I understand the anger of the Thai people,” said Singh.

“As a Filipino LGBTQ+ myself, I’m sad and ashamed that this happened,” said another X user.

However, some also called for the Filipino transwomen to get the punishment they rightfully deserve.

“Please tell your government not to send these girls back home. Apologies for their behavior.”

A story as big as this isn’t spared from meme-worthy moments. One Thai man has garnered praise for his efforts in “defending the dignity of Thai transwomen”. He was arrested by police and paid bail despite people offering to help. Just look at the crowd’s reactions when he was released:
