Over the years, Australia and the Philippines have fostered a good relationship. Yet, it seems the two nations are seeing a new facet of their solid ties following the visit of President Bongbong Marcos, which was met with protest. Here’s everything you need to know:
President Bongbong Marcos recently flew to Australia for a state visit. He went to the Australian Parliament in Canberra to deliver a speech, including the tensions in the West Philippine Sea with China. While addressing the Australian lawmakers, however, Australian Greens Senator Janet Rice pulled out a placard saying: “Stop the human rights abuses.”
A report by The Guardian Australia revealed that Rice was booted out of the chamber, and the Australian Senate has voted to censure her.
Human rights matter in every single case, whether it’s the Philippines, West Papua, Palestine or anywhere else.
It’s shocking that Labor and the Liberals would rather censure me than call out President Marcos’ lethal regime. They must do better to represent Australia’s values. pic.twitter.com/i0YJu5g0ga

The Australian senator has remained firm with her actions, describing them as “deliberate” and “powerful.”
“I did it on behalf of every Filipino person whose human rights have been abused by the government of President Marcos and the government of President Duterte before him,” Rice told the Australian Senate.
Rice said she’s aware of the extrajudicial killings, anti-terrorism laws, and red-tagging incidents plaguing the country.
“Human rights matter, and they matter for every person in the world. I am proud in this Parliament over the ten years I’ve been here. To be speaking up for the human rights of people across the world — whether it’s the Philippines, Tibet, West Papua, Palestine, and here in Australia.”
In a social media post, she also highlighted that corruption under the Marcos administration was “getting worse” and criticized the Australian Government for inviting him to Parliament.
Under President Marcos Jr, corruption in the Philippines is getting worse. There are hundreds of political prisoners and ‘anti-terrorism’ laws are used as legal cover for extrajudicial killings.
Yet the Australian Government invited him to address the Parliament today. Shame. pic.twitter.com/iDcSzBCWkL

Given our country’s current political climate, it’s no surprise Pinoys were split over Rice’s protest. Although some called it disrespectful, others praised the Australian senator for her bravery.
“Thank you for having the courage to do it, not just for the Philippines but for other countries as well,” said one X user.

People pointed out that our senators could learn from the likes of Rice in addressing social issues.
“As a Filipino, I cried watching you fight for our human rights when our own can’t even do it. God bless you, Senator! Mabuhay ka!” Another one wrote.
