In the current state of calamity due to Typhoon Carina, many Filipinos have been displaced and severely affected. But even despite the dangers and hazards, many continue to perform their respective duties, including rescuers, volunteers, healthcare workers, and food service employees. Likewise, netizens have expressed gratitude to journalists and media workers who have braved the pouring rain and floods to deliver timely news even during the worst of the typhoon.
Media outlets GMA News, 24 Oras, ABS-CBN News, TV Patrol, One News PH, and more have mobilized dozens of reporters and journalists to go on the field and cover the severely affected areas.
For these journalists, this is more than just a job; it’s their civic duty to deliver news and serve as a bridge for those in need.
“Hindi ito trabaho para samin, tungkulin sa bayan ang tawag namin dito,” wrote 24 Oras’ Bernadette Reyes. “From Incheon Airport sa Korea, nagpababa sa GMA para mag duty para sa bayan, uulit ulitin para sa bayan.”
As the special coverages continue, Pinoy netizens have shared the journalists’ viral photos and clips, saluting them for their hard work and bravery.
“When disasters strike, that’s when a journalist is most needed. Journalists are trained to respond to crisis,” one Facebook user commented.
Writer Nathan Perez pointed out that despite the age of fake news and misinformation we are currently suffering through, Filipinos still turn to trusted and reliable media outlets in times of calamity. “We rely on the capacity of trained news gatherers. We trust the reach and rescue of media more than other entities who are only willing to tell stories for clout and views. That’s good news in a very sad country situation,” he wrote.
This echoes the statement of Rappler’s Lian Buan during the special coverage of Typhoon Agaton in 2022, which many have continued to quote since. “On our worst days as a nation, it’s the journalists who will show up. Remember that.”
I’ve said this over and over again — you prefer Vloggers and influencers now for your so-called unbiased content, but on our worst days as a nation, it’s the journalists who will show up. Remember that.
