Trend Explainer: Why is Everything Suddenly “Kinda Chic”?

Sep 3, 2026   •   Kathleen Vallo

If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok or Instagram lately, you’ve probably noticed a sea of pale yellow text filling your feed. One of the formats behind the wave is the “kinda chic” trend, which has been gaining traction across social media in recent months.

Why is everything suddenly “kinda chic”?

“Kinda chic” began as a short-form video trend that encourages people to celebrate themselves, their quirks, and the little things they enjoy. While “chic” traditionally refers to something fashionable, stylish, or elegant, the trend gives the word a more playful meaning. Instead of idealizing luxury or perfection, “kinda chic” is about finding charm in things that are personal, ordinary, unconventional, or even a little awkward.

This has allowed the trend to evolve into a flexible format for creators to share what they romanticize or consider cool—even when it wouldn’t traditionally be seen as fashionable or aspirational.

From mundane routines and messy habits to unusual hobbies and random interests, almost anything can become “kinda chic.” Some users have also turned the trend into a way of celebrating personal milestones, small achievements, or unexpected parts of their identity that they are proud of.

Where did the trend start?

While the trend’s exact origin remains unclear, one of the earliest posts came from Instagram user @mariabegins on April 27, 2026. Her photo carousel used the phrase in the context of body positivity, offering an early glimpse into how “kinda chic” could be used to celebrate parts of ourselves that may not always fit conventional beauty standards. It paved the way for other content creators to hop on the trend through reels and photo carousels.

Eventually, the trend made its way to TikTok and other platforms, where its simple and adaptable format made it easy for users to put their own spin on it.

What’s considered “kinda chic” anyway?

Perhaps the trend’s biggest appeal is that there are no strict rules for what counts as “kinda chic.”

It could be your favorite comfort food, a perpetually messy room, an oddly specific hobby, a personal achievement, an everyday routine, or even the most random video sitting in your camera roll. Add the familiar “kinda chic” text, and suddenly, an otherwise ordinary moment becomes something worth sharing.

That simplicity is also what makes the trend feel refreshing. At a time when social media can often feel highly curated, “kinda chic” offers a more relaxed way of presenting yourself online. It encourages people to embrace the imperfect, mundane, and sometimes downright weird parts of their lives instead of constantly trying to make everything look polished.

And perhaps that is why the trend feels so relatable. The things we might once have considered awkward or unremarkable can become the very things that make us—and our content—feel more authentic. In a way, it’s a reminder that you don’t have to fit the traditional definition of “cool” to make something your own kind of chic.
