You know Park Seo Joon from his roles as your favorite oppas from K-dramas like Itaewon Class, What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, Fight For My Way, and even from his brief cameo in award-winning Parasite. But now, you might even see him in Hollywood blockbusters. According to Korean media outlet Star News, Park Seo Joon is reportedly joining the cast of the Captain Marvel sequel entitled The Marvels. Fans of both the actor and the MCU all around the world are excited, especially because only four names have been confirmed in the film since it was announced.
As of writing, only Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau (or Spectrum), Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, and Zawe Ashton in an undisclosed villain role have been confirmed for the film. And after months of waiting, fans finally got another new casting in the form of Park Seo Joon. While there has been no confirmation from Marvel Studios or the actor’s agency Awesome ENT, we know there’s a big chance it’s true since The Marvels director Nia DaCosta knows of and is actually a fan of the actor (she previously tweeted about Park Seo Joon being a “drama boyfriend”). So while we wait for a confirmation, here are some roles we think PSJ could play in The Marvels.
Disclaimer: This is just speculation, don’t take our word for it!
Aside from Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel, there’s a ton of other superheroes and comic book characters in the Marvel universe bearing the same name, so we won’t be too surprised if some of them end up being in the film (it’s literally titled The Marvels!).
One of those characters is the superhero Marvel Boy. A lot of different people have taken up the name from the original Robert Grayson to the Kree Noh-Varr. But a potential Marvel Boy we could see being lined up with The Marvels is Quasar (or Wendell Vaughn), who gained his powers after he put on the Quantum Bands, energy bands that draw energy from another realm called the Quantum Zone. Since Marvel is taking things into the cosmos, Quasar could potentially play a big role in that regard, so we could see PSJ cast for that.
After the first film, it seems like there wouldn’t be a comeback for Mar-Vell, who has already perished even before the movie started and inspired Carol Danvers’ superhero name in the film. But if the writers would revisit that storyline, they could potentially bring in Genis-Vell, who is Mar-Vell’s son. In the comics, he is actually the third person to bear the mantle of Captain Marvel (yes, even way before Carol Danvers). There isn’t a lot of work on him in the comics-verse, but that actually leaves the writers with a lot of room to work with, especially if this is the role PSJ would take on.
Another potential Marvel-named hero that could be included in the film is Blue Marvel. The original Blue Marvel is Adam Brashear, a black hero slash scientific prodigy who gained superhuman powers due to an experiment gone wrong, and since this character is black, PSJ would most likely not be Adam Brashear’s character.
But another character who also took up Blue Marvel’s name is the bioduplicate of the Eternal named Thelius. He’s technically a villain, but with The Eternals about to come out, we could see MCU tying things together with these characters, and maybe PSJ would fulfill a role like this. We’ve seen PSJ mostly in lead, good-guy roles, but we could definitely see him as a villain. He could def make it work.
Yes, we know it’d be a great waste of PSJ’s looks with all those green prosthetics. But hey, Captain Marvel is where we first saw the Skrulls in the films (at least explicitly; who knows if some of the characters we’ve seen before were actually Skrulls . . .), so it would make sense if the Skrulls played a large role in the sequel. He could play a Skrull sleeper agent like Khn’nr, who would take up the face of PSJ when hiding among humans.
We first met the Ravagers in the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie with notable appearances from Michelle Yeoh, Sylvester Stallone, and Ving Rhames. They’ve been roaming the galaxies even before Carol Danvers left Earth to become a hero (and way before the current line-up of Guardians have banded together). So with The Marvels being set in the cosmic plane, we’re hoping to see them back again — maybe even with PSJ in their ranks!
A representative of the human race in the Nova Corps that was first introduced in GOTG, Nova (or Richard Rider) received his helmet and powers from the alien Rhomann Dey, the last surviving soldier of Xandar’s Nova Corps. We already saw that Xandar was destroyed in Thanos’ quest for the Infinity Stones, but we didn’t actually see how and if there were any survivors. For all we know, Rhomann Dey could have made his way to Earth and passed on his powers. And we could definitely see PSJ channeling all that energy from the Nova Force.
Right now, it seems like Captain Marvel is the most powerful Avenger in the MCU (she was the only one who could hold off Thanos on her own, though it was just a few minutes!). But in the comics, there are quite a lot of others who are much more powerful than our badass heroine — one of which is Adam Warlock. In the original Infinity War story, he was the one to gather heroes to stop Thanos. And he’s also got the Soul Stone stuck in his head, just like Vision. And if PSJ plays this powerful character, what a day that would be!
Or Park Seo Joon could be playing a regular guy — an original MCU character we know nothing about! Take Phil Coulson, for instance — One of the most famous characters that was original to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was later adapted into the comics. He was the first S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent that was created particularly for the movies, and he’s become such a central character, especially for Phase 1, that we’re thankful for it. We saw him again in Captain Marvel when he was just a freshly minted field agent serving under not-yet-director Nick Fury. And well, PSJ could definitely be an original character like that, who could provide a much-needed grounding in the cosmic stage of The Marvels.
Whatever his role would be, we know we’d love to see Park Seo Joon on the big screens — and definitely in a Marvel Studios movie. We’re eagerly awaiting the confirmation, @Marvel Studios, @Awesome Ent. Please.
