Christmas came early for fans of Percy Jackson — Disney+ just released the first two episodes of the highly anticipated Percy Jackson and the Olympians (PJO) series based on Rick Riordan’s best-selling novels. Riordan’s books took us readers on an adventure with beloved demigod characters, led us down the rabbit hole of Greek mythology, and made us wish Camp Half-Blood was real. Back in 2010, Percy Jackson had two movie adaptations starring Logan Lerman, but fans were disappointed after the movie had, er, a different interpretation of the books. With the Disney+ series, PJO fans are ecstatic, and here’s why:

Purists will be delighted to know that the Disney+ series not only lives up to the hype but also closely follows the events of the first PJO book. The first two episodes are even named after the quirky book chapter titles. Of course, since it’s a series, they took the liberty of making minor changes here and there, but major plot points remain untouched (phew!). Fans should expect nothing but the best since Riordan himself worked with the series creators. He wouldn’t want to risk another mistake after the OG PJO movies.
percy jackson is a real tv show like straight from the book to screen adaptation like this is not something my twelve year old self dreamt up when reading the books like this is so beautiful to behold pic.twitter.com/DWnFSBX0Fp

If you were the 12-year-old who waited every year for Riordan to release new Percy Jackson books, you’ve probably bawled over the PJO trailer. Now that the series is finally here, is it too dramatic to say it’s everything we wanted it to be? From the age-appropriate actors (we’ll get to that in a bit) to every scene that looked like it was plucked straight from the book, the series didn’t let fans down.

best part of percy Jackson being a tv show is finding out how all the names are actually pronounced. i will ascend to elysium once they speak the word “lasttygionans” or whatever the hell it is

For example, as this X user pointed out, viewers will learn how to pronounce certain words. It’s a huge relief since some of those monsters from Greek mythology are tough to say.
this is 100% my favorite percy moment in the show so far. his grit, his determination, his, dare i say, Impertinence even after knowing his father is a god oHHHH walker nailed this so hard pic.twitter.com/w0FYmE3Qh5

Although we loved Logan Lerman’s Percy with all of our hearts, we unfortunately can’t have him portray a 12-year-old now that he’s an adult (and engaged, might we add). But there’s no doubt Walker Scobel was born for the role. He’s young and able to embody everything we imagined Percy to be — determined, brave, and, at times, impertinent within reason. Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth and Aryan Simhadri as Grover nailed their roles, too, as the Internet has collectively agreed. We can’t wait to watch this cast grow old with us!
omg that’s percy jackson, one of most powerful demigods to exist

Percy Jackson was special from the start because Riordan was an expert at weaving back and forth from danger to light-hearted moments. The series is no different. We see Percy almost dying from escaping a minotaur one minute and the next, dancing on a rock during Capture the Flag at Camp Half-Blood.
the real, true love and soulmatism we’re about to experience on our screens over the next couple of years is going to be insane. #percyjackson pic.twitter.com/dPdSXy5lZL

Let’s be real here. One of the highly anticipated story arcs is that of the series’ biggest ships — Percabeth. And we got glimpses of their less-than-friendly beginning in the first two episodes of Percy Jackson. There is not a single fan who didn’t squeal when Annabeth dropped her iconic line: “You drool when you sleep.” We can’t wait to see Percabeth develop their relationship throughout the years!

It’s Goat Boy and Seaweed Brain, an iconic duo. The tiny detail of Percy swapping sandwich toppings with Grover because the latter is vegetarian is just perfect. Now, we know these two have got each other’s backs, but we’re excited to see them act it out in many battles in the future.
waited years for the percy jackson show and i already finished the first two episodes in less than 2 hours and have to wait another week for episode 3 pic.twitter.com/SDbCNEgmhO

In an age where streaming sites drop all of the season’s episodes so you can binge it in one sitting, PJO chose to leave viewers in suspense. Fans are promised new content every Tuesday to complete the eight episodes of Season 1. That means we have to wait a full seven days before jumping back into the world of half-bloods. It’s agonizing, for sure, but it also gives us something exciting to look forward to every week.
