The year 2015 feels like a lifetime ago. Since then, Filipinos have won two Miss Universe crowns, bagged our first Olympic gold medal, had our first Nobel Prize winner — the list of achievements could go on. Behind every amazing feat and historic win are Filipino supporters who always believed our representatives could make it. After all, we’ve got world-class talent. Unfortunately, the supporters inevitably come with grouchy haters who spew nothing but criticism and discouragement. Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach had her fair share of bashers in the past, and now they’re immortalized in the Facebook comments section, paying the price for being rude. What happened?
The best time to delete this comment was before you posted it.
Here come the haters. Some Pinoys immediately discouraged Pia by saying her beauty just isn’t meant for a Miss Universe candidate. With her, say the haters, our chance for winning the crown has become even more impossible. Another remarked that there were other women who deserved to win Bb. Pilipinas 2015 and that we probably won’t get past the Miss Universe 2015 Top 10.
Luckily for Pia, not all Facebook accounts are handled by bashers. Her supporters fought the haters and left encouraging comments for everyone to read. Pia was complimented on her tenacity for trying to win the crown three times. She was a “refreshing candidate” for others and she gave many a new hope of finally winning the crown.
Even then, some netizens had full confidence that Queen Pia will win and end the Philippines’ 42-year Miss Universe crown drought. Before her, Margie Moran was the last Filipina who brought home the crown in 1973, second only to Gloria Diaz’s historic win in 1969. Present-day Pinoys thanked their fellow kababayans who left comments six years ago about how sure they were of Pia’s win. It’s so satisfying to see comment threads like these.
Six years later, Pinoys look back at the comments section to laugh at the bashers and those who didn’t believe Queen Pia could win the crown.
If Pia’s haters were asked what prompted them to write those comments six years ago, we’re sure they would’ve said something along the lines of “It’s nothing personal, we just want the best woman to represent the country for the Miss Universe pageant.” And that’s part of the problem, isn’t it? It’s no secret that Pinoys are “pageant crazy.” We praise the crown so much we’ve got stricter standards for beauty queens than we have for local politicians. There are certainly lessons to be learned from this embarrassing event.
For one, our candidates are humans. They have feelings, they are like us, and mean comments will make a dent in their armor. Think twice about dropping words that will hurt other people, especially online. The way things are going, Facebook is now a digital record that can embarrass you down the road.
Another lesson is that we don’t support our candidates enough. And we mean the healthy kind of support, not obsessive. We’re the first people to drag them down and give them unhelpful criticism when we should’ve been rooting for them every step of the way. Look at Rabiya Mateo for instance. The Miss Universe 2020 candidate admitted that harsh criticism and hurtful comments from Pinoys affected her. We can do better than that!
Beatrice Luigi Gomez was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2021 last September 30 and make no mistake, she isn’t your typical beauty queen. Beatrice is the first openly queer Miss Universe Philippines candidate, she has a badass tattoo on her arm, and she has a girlfriend too. Pia’s throwback photo couldn’t have trended at a better time than now where our reigning MUPH is gearing up for the pageant this December. It was a reminder for every Pinoy to support our candidate and make sure she goes to battle confident that the country has her back. As for the haters, well, they should’ve learned their lesson by now.
