This Security Guard Allegedly Lost Their Job After Dancing to a TikTok Trend at Work

Oct 24, 2023   •   Kaira Guererro

Mall security guard Gerald Concan went on TikTok to lament how his viral TikTok video allegedly cost them his job. While most Pinoys were aghast at the turn of events, some were convinced that what Concan did was wrong.

Concan joined the viral “Water” dance trend on TikTok, based on South African singer Tyla’s song. Like the thousands that have joined the trend, Concan had the time of his life busting out the moves and delighting his followers, too, if the 6.7 million views are to go by.

“Ang saya pumasok sa mall pag ganito ka happy ang guard. Kudos kay kuya! He definitely enjoy and love his job,” commented one delighted TikTok user.

“Pag di ganito yung guard samin di nako papasok,” said another.

To make things even better, Tyla even reposted Concan’s dance video.

But while thousands enjoyed Concan’s dance, it seems as if management was unhappy about it. In a now-deleted TikTok stitch, Concan said he was terminated from his job “because of this trend.” He even appeared to be holding back tears.

How exactly that video cost him his job, he neglected to explain. Pinoys on social media were left to assume two things. Some assumed he was terminated because he was recording a video while on duty and wearing his work uniform, while some assumed it had something to do with his sexuality.

Concan also left a comment that enraged netizens even more: “Hindi po nila pinakinggan ang side ko. Grabe po talaga, minamaliit po kaming mga security. No work na po, no more AliMall.”

“Need bang mag public apology para makabalik ako?” Concan captioned in another TikTok video.

“Bakit daw hinihingan ka magpupublic apology? You did nothing wrong,” read one comment.

“No need!! Hayaan mo sila. They don’t deserve you. Nagpapasaya kalang girl,” said another.

“For me, as long as kaya mong gawin yung work mo, regardless of your gender, dapat talaga ay hindi ka talaga matanggal.. Unless nahuli ‘tong si security guard na nagti-TikTok habang naka-duty at hindi niya nagagampanan yung work niya,” said another TikTok user.

Viral video gets mixed reactions

“Hi, [Mayor Joy], please know that the security officer was terminated and discriminated by his company, not for his negligence with his job but, FOR BEING GAY. I hope this enlightens everyone why we need to PASS THE SOGIE BILL NOW,” said one user on X, calling out the Quezon City mayor’s attention.

But while many rallied behind Concan, others believed he was wrong.

“Mali ata information mo, makikita naman madami sya violation, una naka duty sya, pangalawa naka uniform sya ng agency nya ng ginagawa nya yung sayaw pangatlo may mga kumpanya na hindi nag aallow na i uoload sa social media ang ganyan na naka sout ng uniform. Katulad sa main,” read one post on X.

“Para saken naka-uniform sya dapat binigyan nya ng respeto ang uniporme niya. Tapos lalambot lambot,” said another.

Concan isn’t the first security guard to record a TikTok while at work

Pinoy netizens pointed out that Concan isn’t the first security guard to enjoy filming themselves dancing while in uniform. Others who have done it before Concan — like the viral video of Davao-based security guard Ryniel Pineda — didn’t lose their jobs.

Even government officials are allowed this freedom without being under threat of termination:

This isn’t the first time the public enjoyed Concan’s dancing skills. In 2021, a young Concan showed off his dance moves during Eat Bulaga‘s “Bawal Judgemental” segment.

Even more recently, Concan posted a TikTok behind-the-scenes footage of what seems to be a guesting for Unang Balita at GMA’s Unang Hirit.
